Nathaniel Phelps was born 5 October 1690 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, to father William Phelps[1] and mother Abigail Stebbins.
There is little information available about Nathaniel's life between birth and death. At a time and place unknown, he married Lois. At a time also unknown, he relocated to East Granby (part of Simsbury), Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, where, according to The Phelps Family of America...(Phelps and Servin) he and Lois had four children:
Ahner [sic.] Phelps and Servin is notably prone to errors. The first three children have been verified by other means; "Ahner" (or perhaps, Abner) has not been found in the records.[2]
Nathaniel died 25 February 1774 in East Granby, and is buried in East Granby Cemetery, Hartford County, Connecticut. His gravestone reads: "In Memory of Mr Nat Phelps who died Feb 25 AD : 1774 in ye 83rd year of his age." The memento mori reads "The Sweet Remembrance/ ( of the just/ Shall Flourish when/ (He Sleeps in Dust."[3]
