The Lucas and the Phelps family lived in Jefferson county Virginia, but the portion of Virginia where they lived became part of Kentucky, separated when Kentucky was admitted to the Union in 1792. On July 22, 1793, in Jefferson county, Kentucky, Anthony Phelps filed his intent to marry Nancy Brashear and Cornelius Lucas filed his intent to marry Anthony's sister, Sarah Phelps. Anthony and and Nancy were married the day after Christmas, 1793. Cornelius and Sarah opted for a Spring wedding and were joined in matrimony on April 13, 1794. Cornelius Lucas, Sr. died September 17, 1829, in Hardin county, Kentucky. Sarah survived her husband.
In article in the "Century Magazine" for 1887, a school teacher told about boarding with a Mr Lucas and his wife, whose cabin consisted of a single room, sixteen feet square and was tenanted by Mr Lucas and his wife and their ten children, three dogs, two cats and the teacher.
Sinking Spring Farm, in Hodgenville, Hardin County, Kentucky is known for being the birthplace of former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, though the location is now part of neighboring Larue County. Family lore is that Cornelius and his family lived near the Thomas Lincoln family when President Abraham Lincoln was born there, in 1809.
