Sarah Philbrick is the daughter of Captain James Philbrick and Hannah (Perkins) Philbrick, born June 11, 1682. She was twice married and the mother of fourteen children. At her death on 30 May 1761[1], at the age of 79 years, her descendants numbered 230, of whom 182 were living.[2]
On August 8, 1701, Sarah married Ensign John Sanborn, the son of Richard Sanborn (1655 - 1716) and Ruth (Moulton) Sanborn (1659 - 1685), of North Hampton, Rockingham county, New Hampshire. [3] According to Chapman, John died September 3, 1727, at the age of 47
After John's death, Sarah married, about 1731, to Lieutnant Thomas Rawlins of Stratham, with whom she lived 27 years. [4]
John Sanborn married Sarah Philbrook (aka Philbrick) and lived in North Hampton. They were the parents of 14 children: Daniel, Benjamin, Richard, Nathan, Elisha, Ebenezer, John, James, Hannah, who married Deacon Stephen Dudley, and five other daughters. He died at the age of 48. Of his wife, the following obituary is found in a paper printed in 1761, now in the possession of one of her descendants:[5]
Died in Northampton, May 30, 1761, in the 79th year of her age, widow Sarah Rawlings. She was Sarah Philbrook, and was married to John Sanborn of Hampton, when about 19, lived with him 27 years and had 14 children, 8 sons and 6 daughters, who all lived to settle in life, and to have children, and some of them grand children. The number of children, grand children and great-grand children at her death, was 239. Of which number 182 were living at her death. A considerable time after her first husband's death, she married Lieutenant Thomas Rawlings of Straham, with whom she lived 27 years, and since his death has lived 4 years a widow.
Researcher's Notes
John Sanborn was born in 1681, and died at the age of 48. Therefore the year he died is estimated to be 1729. Sarah's obit indicates that she lived with each husband for 27 years. If Sarah and Thomas Rawlings were married for 27 years and then she was a widow for four years after he died, then she must have married him soon after her first husband's death, say 1730.
