Francis Macfarlane Phillips was born on 15 May 1911.
On 4 February 1939 he married Jean Mary Medley, younger daughter of John Spencer Selwyn Medley and Ruth Mabel Webster, with issue three children.
He served during World War II, Corporal, Service No 463182, New Zealand Military Infantry Brigade, Second Expeditionary Force. His address prior to enlistment was 1 Belvedere Rd, Wellington; his next of kin on embarkation was his wife, Mrs J M Phillips, c/o Mrs J S S Medley, 23 Wallace Place, New Plymouth.
He died at 5pm on 3 December 1988 at his residence in Rotorua, "peacefully in his chair watching television". His widow survived him by 20 years and died in 2011 in her 97th year.
They had nine grandchildren.
