Witnesses to marriage were William DAVIS and Mary Ann DAVIS. William put up the bond for the marriage license. Licence has James JAQUES from Broadway and Susanna PHILLIPS from Wolford
This information is important: there is a well known family tale claiming James and Susannah eloped because her father was unahppy about their marriage. The entire tale sounds a bit romantic and the marriage bonds leaves the story in doubt.
This tale is given as the reason for Susanna having a long scar down her face, said to be created by her father as he chased her accross the field with a hay fork and stabbing her as she hid in the hay stack. Then with blood streaming down her face she runs across the field - her father not seeing her? and was married in the church. He then later forgave her. Hmm... it sound like a great story given to the children to explan the scar on her face.
