Biography

John Phillips, son of Thomas, was born about 1502 at Picton Castle, Pembroke, Wales.

On 8 December 1520 JOHN PHILIPPS, server of the chamber, succeeded his father Thomas in the offices of steward of Llanstephan and Oysterlowe and coroner and escheator of Pembrokeshire and the lordship of Haverfordwest. His appointment was recorded in the Patent Rolls in December 1520

John Thomas ap Philip, sewer, and John Lloid, page, of the Chamber. To be stewards and receivers of the lordships of Llanstephan and Oisterlowe, S. Wales, during pleasure, with 100s. a year. Sir Th[omas] ap Philip and Maurice Lloyd, their fathers, having held the same offices. [1]

John married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Griffith of Penrhyn.[2] [3]

At the time of his appointment on 10 April 1532 as one of the stewards and receivers of the manors of Rice Griffith, he was a steward of the king's chamber. He was High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1542.[2] [4]

His son RICHARD (born 1535) interested himself in Welsh literature (see Pen. MS. 155).

John died on the Thursday after the feast of S. Meugan 1551 (see Pen. MS. 176, 397; W. Wales Hist. Records, vii, 161-4) He was succeeded by his son WILLIAM PHILIPPS whose wife was Janet Perrot, sister of Sir John Perrot, the eldest son, Richard having already died in about 1551. When William died in 1573 , his brother, Morgan (d. 1585) succeeded to his estates.[2]

Children

The Dictionary of Biography names three sons for John Phillips of Picton:

  • Richard (died abt 1551)
  • William (died 1573) [5]
  • Morgan (died 1585)

All other children attached to this profile are part of a garbled internet genealogy created by Richard Ripley and actually belong to several different families, mostly in England. I will be looking for their sources and correct families on behalf of the England Project. Greet-49 09:30, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Research Notes

Two daughters were married into the families of Wyriott of Orielton and Laugharne of St. Bride’s. Needs research.

I have been looking into this family again searching for sources. They are hard to find and they don't necessarily agree when you do find them. I now think that my suppositions of the dates of birth might be incorrect. I have found in a number of reports that say his eldest son was Richard, born in 1535, but he died in 1551 before his father, who was succeeded by the next son, William, very young at the time, who also died early and was succeeded by his next brother, Morgan, who kept the dynasty going. I have not found mention of the birth years of William and Morgan, but by these accounts they would be different to the dates I have mentioned below.

If I had the time I would like to go through this entry with some care. There are a number of peculiarities in the number of children, their years of birth and their locations of birth. However, the amount of time I have available at present does not allow for the time needed to correct this profile. I have this family in a separate tree I have developed in Ancestry.com and I can only really agree with 3 of the children, but I determined all 3 of these and 2 others, were born at Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire. The ones I agree with are: Morgan, born 1525, Mary, born 1528 and William, born 1530. The other 2 I have identified are Richard, born 1535 and Jane (or Janet), born 1540.

I also have found a John Philipps (the first baronet Philipps, 1560 to 1629), son of Morgan, also born at Picton Castle, one of whose wives was Ann Perrot. I also have good reason to believe that John and Ann had a daughter Frances in about 1605 who married Sir Hugh Owen in 1629. It is also possible that they had a son Richard, but I have not found the date of his birth, but he died in 1648.

When you start to look at the dates of birth of the children listed in the profile, (which does not seem to agree with the list in the biography), there were 3 children listed as being born in 1530, all born in different locations.

My research so far has only found 5 children, all born at Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire, and none in Yorkshire, Devon, Herefordshire or Shropshire.

This profile will require an intensive rework. I cannot say with certainty that my observations are correct, but I believe I have identified where there are errors.

I only realised there was a problem when I looked into my connection with Samuel Morse and was surprised to find Morgan Philipps, born in Pembrokeshire, had a brother John born in Devon, causing me to look more closely at Morgan Philipps profile, leading to his father’s profile. I was aware of Morgan Philipps, because I knew of his connection to my family.

I hope someone can be found to work on this.

I was going through old records when I made the spouse's merge, but I forgot that there had been some question about mixing of generations on an earlier merge. This may have been the original problem.

Since there are no sources for this profile, I will approve the merge. The parents and siblings are shown to be the same as 3806. Hopefully, we can catch the birth and death date disparities on the final merge.

Phillips-3806 and Philips-404 appear to represent the same person because: Same birthplace, same spouse, dates are reasonable. Duplicate spouse will also require merge.

Philips-404 and Phillips-155 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and wife, death dates are both estimates as there are no sources listed for the death dates, just other peoples trees.

Philips-409 and Philips-320 appear to represent the same person because: they are the same person

Phillips-771 and Philips-320 do not represent the same person because: Different birth and death dates
Phillips-771 and Phillips-155 do not represent the same person because: Too much of a difference in birth/death dates!
Phillips-771 and Phillips-155 appear to represent the same person because: Writing to propose a merge of Phillips-771 into Phillips-155.

I wonder if it is a corruption of "Blockhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Blockhouse

Jane Dwnn and Thomas Philipps are my 13 x great grandparents.

I live in Hampshire, and I am really unhappy about "Ballockesey". "Milton" presumably refers to a district of Portsmouth (Portsea) on the shores of Langstone Harbour. But I am at a loss to figure what that place name Ballockesey refers to.
