There is a firm possibility that Zerubabel had no children. He is definitely not related to Theophilus. Read this Dyna Phillips/Phillipse/Phillipsen, is believed to be of Dutch ancestry, so would not be a child of Zerubabel. Jacob Phillips born 1667 in Salem Mass. is in the wrong place entirely.

Note
The possibility of descendants is still valid - his pre-nup with Martha (see the Phillips DNA Project link given above) states the estate goes to the surviving spouse, not naming children in the estate was a decision that was made before marriage. The Phillips DNA project does not rule out Zerobabel's descendants nor his parentage, it does suggest no known descendants have been tested.

Based upon the documents of Burnet Landreth, Jr., a descendant claiming Zerobabel as an ancestor, presented for membership into the Society of Colonial Wars[1] and Sons of the Revolution,[2] Zerobabel Phillips had at least one child. [3]

Biography

"Zorabable the sonn of George and Elizabath borne the 5 day of the 2d month 1632" (April 5, 1632), in Watertown, Massachusetts[4]. His name, which comes from the book of Ezra, was variously spelled Zorababel, Zerobabel, Zerubabel, Zerubabbel, etc. The Biblical Zerubabbel led the reluctant children of Israel out of their life of ease in Babylon to Jerusalem, where they rebuilt the Temple of Solomon. The Puritans saw this story as a metaphor for their own journey out of England into the hardships of the New World.

Zorababel left Watertown at the age of 16 and settled in Southampton, Long Island. He died there after 1689.[5] There is record of his corresponding with Joseph Tainter in October, 1684, as his attorney, in regard to his parents' estate.[6] Zorabable was an Ensign 1662, Lt. of militia 1668/69[7]and an Innkeeper 1672, Sheriff & Constable 1683.[citation needed]

Zerubabel had pre-nup agreements with both his wives, Ann (Cooper) White and Martha (Topping) Herrick.[8]

On the 10 May 1687, he agrees to leave his estate to no one but Martha Herrick.[9]

“An inventory and aprizement of the estate of zerobabell phillips of Southampton, late deceas’d, In the County of Suffolk in the Province of newyork: taken by us Jo[hn] Jessup, John Howell, Jun., and Samuell Johns, who were sworn thereunto before Major Howell this tenth day of October 1687." Estate was valued at 98 pounds, 18 shillings and 6 pence. there was no land on the inventory. His widow Martha was given administration of the estate. [10]. So he died 1687 not 1689 as mentioned in a previous paragraph.

From Anderson's Great Migration Begins: It says Zorobabel the son of George, b Watertown 5 Apr 1632; m. (1) after 1662 Ann (Cooper) White, d/o John Cooper and the widow of John White; apparently Zorobabel m (2) in 1686 of 1687 Martha (Tapping) Herrick, d/o Thomas Tapping and widow of James Herrick.

RECORDS The records of Southampton, Long Island, contain many reference to Zorababel Phillips and his family, as compiled by F.B. Lee, supra. For example:

Vol. 2, p. 41. "John Oldfield binds himself in 20 pounds to appear and answer Mrs. Ann Phillips, in an action concerning commonage April 25, 1664."P. 32. "Joseph Rainer in an action of trespass upon the case, (concerning a pit was digged in the common whereby he was damnified.) against Zerobabel Phillips and wife. Ann Phillips according to her engagement produced her son to the Court, so answer to her bond. At the said Court, Dec., 1st, 1663."

P. 35. "July 28, 1659. Zerobabel Phillips was a witness to an agreement by two Indian

"Sachems relating to the whale fishery on Long Island."

P. 78. Zerobabel Phillips was mentioned among a lot of residents of Southampton in drawing lots of land. This occurred at a townmeeting held June 25, 1679.

In 1657, Zerobabel Phillips was commissariat and ensign in Long Island militia, and in 1678 lieutenant.

In 1674, he is mentioned in his mother's will (see notes under Elizabeth Bond).

No will has been located for Zorababel Phillips. Children with Anne [11]

Phillips-7168 and Phillips-1919 appear to represent the same person because: Only one Zerubabel (spelled anyway) is mentioned by Anderson in Great Migration Begins as son of George. So either Phillips-7168 - "A" is not the son of George; "B" was born in 1632 or "C" if a first Zerubabel, he would have died before 1632 (birth of 2nd Zerubabel). Ancestry trees have this son born anywhere from 1616 to 1632.
