Uriah was born in 1817 in New York. He settled in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana about 1839. Oral history says that after his father died in 1832 he came to Louisiana to study law with James Turner in exchange for tutoring the Turner children. He was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 1842 and married Mr. Turner's daughter Evelina Theodosia in 1844. He practiced law and was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1855 Uriah was appointed & paid $15,000 to revise and index the Statutes of Louisiana. Uriah died in 1859 from injuries he received in a river boat explosion that occurred near Baton Rouge. He was on his way to New Orleans for a meeting of the legislature. [1]
