Philip was, according to the earliest surviving medieval Welsh manuscript pedigree, the son of Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog.[1][2]
His paternal ancestry was documented in Peniarth MS 131, written about 1500 by Ieuan Brechfe.[3] The manuscript records him as: "ph[ilip] ap mad[og] ap Ieu[a]n ap mad[og] ap Gil[y]m ap Sr aron".[2]
In Lewys Dwnn's heraldic visitations of Wales, made between 1586 and 1613, he was again recorded as "Flylib ap Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog ap Gwilim ap Syr Aron" in three separate pedigrees.[4][5] However, a fourth pedigree described him as: "Flylib ap Ievan Esgwier" (vol. 1, p. 114).[4]
He married Elen ferch Gwilym ap Caradog.[1] In Dwnn's heraldic visitations, she was recorded as "Sioned v[erch] Gwilim ap Kradog"[4] and "v[erc]h Willm ab Kradog".[5] Their children are recorded as:
