Disputed Origins

The origins of Elizabeth Walker, wife of James Walker, are not determined. Savage and Pope identified Elizabeth Walker as a daughter of William Phillips, whose will identified her husband as "son-in-law," but that same will calls Elizabeth "daughter-in-law," which could be interpreted as indicating that she was his not his daughter but his step-daughter, specifically his wife's daughter by a previous marriage. From references in a court record to Samuel Crum, a deceased kinsman of his wife, and James Waker; a reference to Samuel Bitfield in the will of Samuel Cromes; and a reference to "sister Crowne" in the will of Samuel Bitfield's widow Elizabeth; Anderson inferred that one of Elizabeth Walker's parents probably was closely related to Samuel Cromes and Samuel Bitfield's widow Elizabeth.[1] Anderson did not, however, identify their relationship.

See James Walker's profile for an excellent write up about Elizabeth's disputed origins.

Biography

Elizabeth Phillips was born about 1619 in Somerset, England, and died at age 59 in 1678 in Raynham, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony. There are three dates given for her death: July 8 by Proprietors's records; July 30 by Plymouth records and Aug 14 by her gravestone.[2]

She was the first wife of James Walker. They married about 1643 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.[3]

In his History of Taunton, Massachusetts, Emery said that Elizabeth's gravestone in the Walker burying ground was the oldest known gravestone in Taunton.[4] Her gravestone inscription reads: "Here lies the body of Elisabeth Walker the wife of James Walker aged 59 died the year 1678 August the 14."[5]

I am removing William Phillips as her father. His will mentions her as step-daughter, not as his daughter.

Based on the analysis by Anderson discussed and cited here and on the profile of James Walker, I think that Elizabeth (Phillips) Walker (1618-1678) should be disconnected from William Phillips (abt.1588-aft.1654) as her father. She can be connected to his wife as her mother, but that mother should not have an LNAB of Parker and should not also be the wife of Samuel Bitfield.

Added: The will of William Parker reportedly mentions Elizabeth, wife of James Walker, suggesting that she was his niece. If so, she could have been the daughter of his brother or his sister.
