Note N02090"Up until very recently children were usually named after family members. The usual pattern is as follows: first son, named father's father; second son, named after mother's father; third son, named afterfather's paternal grandfather; fourth son, named after mother's paternal grandfather; fifth son, named after father's maternal grandfather; sixth son, named after mother's maternal grandfather. The same thing happened for the daughters except that you always started with the mother's side first. The first daughter was named after the mother's mother, the second daughter after the father's motherand so on. This is only a rule of thumb, there are many variations to be found - instead of naming it after a grandparent, sometimes an aunt or an uncle was used." If this holds true, Stephen's father would have been Meredith and Sibby's father would have been John. Sibby's mother would have been Alcey and Stephen's mother Phoebe. Why didn't Meredith name his son Stephen instead of John? Alcey named a daughter Sybil; Milly named a daughter Sibby; Mary Ann named a daughter Sibilla or Sibby (shown both ways in the census). Abagail did name her first son, Stephen and a grandson was named Labourne. Just rambling on, trying to make some sense of this family. Linda

From Linda Phillips:
Yes, Phoebe Phillips married Larkin Manord (Maynard) in Wilkes and
they were in Pike Co, GA by 1830. Their son born in 1827 was Meredith
Manord. Larkin was the bondsman on Susannah Phillips who married
Hiram Ryon, Meredith Phillips who married Judah Snow and Mary Ann
Phillips who married Squire Harris. We know that Mary Ann was Sibby's
daughter because Sibby was living with her in 1850. When Emily
"Milly" Phillips married John Evans, John Phillips was bondsman and
Stephen Phillips gave permission. Since all of these people ended up
in Russell, I believe that Stephen & Sibby were the parents of all of
these people. The census of 1810 indicated that Stephen & Sibby had 7
daughters and 2 sons. These girls do match up and I think that they
only have Meredith & John as sons.
Now, why is the name Meredith so big in the family. I wonder how
Meredith, our John's father died. Since some of these Meredith's were
born in NC in 1827, I think our Meredith died before they headed to
Russell Co or they are all named after another Meredith (perhaps a
grandfather).
I do think we have the tree correct with Stephen & Sibby's children.
. In 1790, he had 1 male and 1 female child. This was mostlikely Meredith & Alcy. In 1800, he had one male 10-15 (Meredith) and
7 girls (6 under 10 and 1 10-15-Alcy).
