The origins of John Phillips of Duxbury and later of Marshfield, Massachusetts are unknown. His birth is estimated to be about 1602 by his will dated October 20, 1691, in which he stated he was about 89 years old. [2]
Marriages
John's first wife's name is unknown, but from his will, some of the children listed are from a marriage prior to his marriage to the widow Grace (___) Halloway/Holloway. [2][3] Some have assumed her first name might have been Mary, based on their daughter being named Mary.
John married second, Grace (___), the widow of William Hallowell, on July, 6, 1654, in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony.
[4][3]
Edward Buckley and Grace Hallowell, had given bond in the Plymouth Court to secure L10 each, from the administration of their father William's estate. On June 8, 1654, Mr. Buckley was cleared by the court from this obligation and John Phillip's took on the responsibility for the payments. [3]
Both John's wife, Grace, and his son Jeremiah Phillips, Grace's step-son, were killed by lightning on October 3, 1666. [3][5]
After Grace's death, John married third, Faith (Clark) Dotey, widow of Edward Dotey on March 14, 1666 [1666/7] in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony [6] The couple had a marriage agreement dated February 23, 1666/7. [7] Faith was born in England about 1619, daughter of Thurston and Faith (___) Clark, and came to New England in April 1634 on the ship Francis. [7]
His wife Faith was buried on December 21, 1675 at Marshfield. [8][7] Her will was written on December 12, 1675, and in it she left her estate to her daughters by her previous marriage. [9]
John took for his fourth wife, Ann (Hatch) Torrey on April 3, 1677 in Marshfiled.[4] Ann was baptized at Wye, Kent, England on December 3, 1626, the daughter of William and Jane (Young) Hatch [10] and was the widow of James Torrey of Scituate. [11] =
Death
John died at Marshfield, between October 20, 1691 when his will was written and May 10, 1692 when it was proved. In his will he names:[2] "Massachusetts, Plymouth County, Probate Records, 1633-1967," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L97D-JDK7 : 19 March 2023), Probate records 1686-1702 and 1849-1867 vol 1-1F > image 77 of 490; State Archives, Boston.

What proves this is the same William who went to Hartford?

Answer: no corresponding children born in Shermanbury. We don't know her first name or her last.
Phillips-9089 and Phillips-3053 appear to represent the same person because: Use b. 1601. death Oct 1691 was date of will the other is date of probate. Grace Dotey was name of her first husband She is Grace Unknown. Son Benjamins are the same
Since this profile has Benjamin a son of the immigrant and Faith (allegedly Doty) wife of the immigrant, and the date of his will as a death date. He most resembles John Phillips the immigrant, not the son of the immigrant. I am detaching him from father Phillips-3053 and proposing a merge with Phillips-3053
Regarding John: (1) There was a John bpt. 1622 in Arlington to a John and a Mary. However, there is no evidence to connect this family with the family in Massachusetts. (2) Faith Clark, widow Doty was married to the immigrant father John not the son. (3) The John who died in 1691 was the immigrant father. Terry and Howard, who would you like this to be? Mary Street is real enough but there is no proof she was the wife of this John Phillips. Objections to disconnecting?
Mary Gerrard is real enough, but there is no evidence to link her with Phillips either. Merges have been proposed, Then she will need to be disconnected.
