Biography

Tobias Philips was born January 25, 1750, in Richland county, Virginia and was living in Montgomery county, Virginia at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Tobias enlisted in the Montgomery County, Militia and served under Captain Bobbitt, and Captain Isham. Also he rendered material aid to the patriots. [1]

Tobias is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A090772. DAR records indicate that Tobias died before March, 1809, in Grayson county, Virginia and that his wife's name was "Peggy" (no maiden name given). Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their sons, Richard Philips, who married Catherine Goad;, John Philips, who married Sarah "Sally" Worrell; Joseph Philips, who married Millie Lawson; and William Philips, who married Allie B. Elizabeth Henson; and of their daughters, Hannah Philips, who married James Henson; Elizabeth Philips, who married Timothy Dalton; Frances Philips, who married Lewis Dalton; Jane Philips, who married John Cock; and Molly Philips, who married Frederick Quesenberry. [2]

Tobias is the son of George Philips, born circa 1728, in Richmond county, Virginia, who died after 1781, in Pittsylvania county, Virginia. Applications for membership in the DAR may also be filed under the DAR records for George, who is DAR Ancestor #A108681 [3] Tobias is buried at Plantation Cemetery, Greasy Creek, Floyd County, VA.[4]
