Biography

Ellen Jane Phillips was born in May 1846 in Hubberston, Pembrokeshire, Wales to Robert Phillips and Mary (Charles) Phillips. Her birth was registered in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Charles.^[1]

Ellen Jane Phillips, daughter of Robert & Mary, was baptised on 26 May 1846 in Hubberston.^[2]

In 1861 Ellen Jane Phillips (age 14, Dressmaker) lived at Quay Street in St Mary, Pembrokeshire with her father Robert (57, Sales Man), mother Mary (52, Domestic Duties), and sister Mary Maria (10, Scholar).^[3]

Ellen Jane Phillips married William Adams on 29 Dec 1868 at St Thomas, Haverfordwest.^[4] The marriage was registered in Haverfordwest in the last quarter of the year.^[5]

In 1871 Ellen Jane Adams (age 24, Housekeeper) lived in Tenby, Pembrokeshire with her husband William (23, Butcher) and son Charles G (1), as well as servant Elizabeth Hitchings (21).^[6]

In 1881 Ellen Jane Adams (age 34) lived at High St in Tenby St Mary In Liberty with her husband William (33, Butcher) and five sons: Charles G (11, Scholar), Henry E (9, Scholar), William (6, Scholar), Robert L (4), and Harold S (3), as well as cousin Annie M Glinstone (16) and servant Martha Griffiths (16).^[7]

Ellen and her family immigrated to the United States in 1889 - Sailing from England to New York aboard the SS City of Paris: Wm Adams (41), wife Ellen J (41), and four sons: Robt (11), Harold (10), Hugh (8), and Fred (7).^[8] Ellen's three older sons immigrated at different times - William in 1887, Charles in 1888, and Henry in 1899.

In 1900 Ellen J Adams (age 53) lived at Davis or 21st St in Precinct 11 of Portland city Ward 3, Multnomah County, Oregon with her husband William (52, Butcher) and six sons: Chas G (31, Fish Business), Henry E (29, Dry Goods Clerk), William (26, Cashier Telegraph Co), Harold (23, Dry Goods Clerk), U Phillips (19, Dry Goods Clerk), and Frederick H (17).^[9] Sons Charles and William were Naturalized Citizens (having been in the USA longer), the rest were still Aliens.

In 1910 Ellen J Adams (age 59) lived in Portland Ward 10 with her husband William (62, Wholesale Butcher) and three sons: Harry E (39, Butcher), Hugh P (28, Butcher), and Fredrick H (27, Butcher).^[10]

Ellen's husband passed away in 1917.

In 1920 Ellen Adams (age 70) lived at E 46th Street in Portland with her son Henry (48, Owner&Packer at Wholesale Meats).^[11] According to this census Ellen became a Naturalized Citizen in 1910.

Ellen Jane Adams passed away on 27 Jun 1926 in Portland.^[12] She is buried at Rose City Cemetery in Portland with her husband.^[13]
