Biography

Lucy /Pickens estimated birth date is 1702 in Ulster, Ireland[1]

Mathew Gillespie traveled from Ireland to Pennsylvania with the Pickens family. Lucy Pickens married Mathew Gillespie in 1722 at Presby. Church, Pennsylvania. After Mathew died, Lucy married John Carr (Kerr). Records of Tinkling Spring Presby.

On 27 March 1740 in Orange County Court, Virginia, "John Carr made oath that he imported himself, Lucy his wife, Margaret Gilasby, Matthew Glasby, his wife's children, Jane, Wm:, Barbara, Lucy & Martha Carr, his children, at his own Charge from Ireland to Philadelphia & from thence into this Colony and that this is the first time of his proving his & their rights in order to obtain Land" in Virginia. The oath was ordered to be certified.[2]

She married twice: m1: Matthew Gillespie, m2: John Carr [aka Kerr].

In 1749 and 1761 she was listed with her husband John Kerr, selling land in Augusta VA to their sons in law.[3]

  • Augusta County, Virginia (unorganized; organized 1745) was created in 15 Dec 1738 and was formed from Orange County.
  • Botetourt County, Virginia (pending; effective 1770) was created in 28 Nov 1769 from Augusta County.
  • Cowpasture River lies to the west of and is not the same place as Beverley Manor.
  • The entirety of Beverley Manor lies within present-day Augusta County, bounded on north by Middle River, east and south by South River, and west by a line a little east of Spotswood.

The birth/death dates for Kerr is inaccurate. I do not have the correct info and would like to ask the other profile managers if they can find the correct dates.

These errors are also with her husband Gillespi, and children.

Pickens-176 and Pickens-42 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate, same parents spouse John Kerr
Added are the dates Lucy married to Matthew Gillespie and John Kerr. Removed was marriage to Matthew Gillespie Jr he was her son, born 1726. Her 1st husband, Mathew, father was William Gillespie (abt 1690) so there was no "Matthew 'Jr'" at that time.
