Biography

James was the son of James Pickering and Margaret Lascelles of Killington, Westmorland and Ellerton, Yorkshire.[1] [2][3][4][5]In 16 Edward 4 (1476/7) he filed a proof of age, so he was born about 1455/6.[6]In a secondary source citing the Proof of Age, he is said to be born 15 March 1454/5.[7]

His father had died in the lifetime of his own father, so James became the heir of his grandfather James Pickering as a minor in 1460.[8]

He married Anne Moresby, daughter of Sir Christopher Moresby. They had sons Christopher, James, Thomas, and William. [1][2][3][4].[9] They also had a daughter Anne (m. Sir Robert Bellingham). [5]

James Pickering of Killington, Westmorland, made a Will on 6 August 1497, mentioning his wife, his father-in-law Christopher Moresby, his son and heir Christopher, his other sons James, Thomas, and William, his daughter Anne, and his brother John.[10]

He died on 2 May 1498.[10]

Research Notes

His death date and place have been changed to match the source cited.

Nicolson and Burn also give him a daughter Margaret Pickering, who married Sir William Stapleton; however, a Stapleton genealogy lists the marriage of William Stapleton and Margaret Pickering as having taken place before 1459, too early for her to be the daughter of this James Pickering.[5][11]

Pickering-1110 and Pickering-181 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same death date

Due to current ill health, I am unable to undertake complex merges, however as you are pre 1500 aproved you can undertake the required actions

There seems to be a string of merges needed with this family. I believe this James Pickering needs to be merged with Pickering-1110. (I have added additional sources to Pickering-1110.) Also his wife Ann Moresby-1 needs to be merged with Ann Moresby-3. And son Christopher Pickering-182 can be merged with Christopher-655. And Christopher's daughter Ann Pickering-183 can be merged with Ann Pickering. 229. I have some additional sources if needed.

His death date needs to be corrected to 2 May 1498. There is no source for the current 1519 date.

Sources: Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem... Henry VII, Vol. 2 nos. 88 and 90 https://www.british-history.ac.uk/inquis-post-mortem/series2-vol2/pp45-67 Writ 13 May, inquisition 28 June, 13 Henry VII. [1498] Cites Will dated 6 August, 12 Henry VII [1497] and IPM says he died 2 May last [1498] The Will included in IPM names sons Christopher (heir), James, Thomas, and William and daughter Anne.

Pickering-3247 and Pickering-1110 appear to represent the same person because: very similar name for wife. Need some reliable sources located and then merge this as well as the wives or reject due to evidence proving the existence of both.

Pickering-171 removed as father--dates more than a century apart and no source provided. It appears that this profile (James Thomas Pickering) was confused with Pickering-1110 due to the unsourced inclusion of name Ferebie in Moresby-3, wife of Pickering-171.

Note this profile (Pickering-3247) is shown as having wife with Ferebie surname.

I'd recommend the merge as well, but don't do pre-1500 at this time.

Pickering-1294 and Pickering-1110 appear to represent the same person because: neither profile has sources, dates are estimates, but, both profiles have same wife's name. Work is needed to determine if these are the same man, or whether the wife is attached incorrectly
