Joseph Christopher Pickering was born in 1882 at Birmingham, Warwickshire. the son of Edward Pickering and Ann Maria Hughes. [1]
In the 1891 census Joseph was living with his parents and siblings at 25 Lime St, Tunstall, Staffordshire. He was aged 9 years. His father was incorrectly named Walter Pickering in this census. [2]
In 1901 the family was living at 28 Court, 4 House Vicarage Rd, Aston Manor, Warwickshire. Joseph, aged 18, was working as a steel filer. [3]
Christopher Joseph Pickering, as named, married Alice Hallard on 15 January 1905 at St. Basil’s Church, Aston Juxta, Birmingham. Their marriage certificate recorded Joseph was a bachelor aged 22 and a brass finisher. His father was named as Edward Pickering, a shoemaker. Alice was a spinster aged 24 and employed in ammunition work. Her father was named as George Hallard, a carter. This couple were living next door to each other at the time of their marriage, Joseph at 22 Watery Lane and Alice at 20 Watery Lane. Their witnesses were Harry Hallard, Alice’s brother, and May Pickering, Joseph’s sister. [4]
In the 1911 census this couple were living at 20 Florence Avenue, Florence Rd, Erdington, Birmingham. Christopher Joseph, as named, was aged 28 and working as brass & copper tube annealer. Alice was aged 30. [5]
Their only child Harry Valentine Pickering was born 1 January 1913.
In the 1921 census the family was living at 3 Birmingham Rd, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Christopher Joseph, aged 39, was a brass tube annealer at Bayliss & Co., Islington Tube Works, Sheepcote Rd, Birmingham. Alice was aged 40. Son Harry was aged 8 years. [6]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Joseph and Alice were living at 2 Florence Avenue, Sutton Coldfield. Joseph, born 31 May 1882, was aged 57. He was working as a gardener. Alice, born 18 December 1880, was aged 58. Also living with them was Bertha Wisdom, aged 23, a sewing machinist. [7]
Joseph Christopher Pickering died in 1940 aged 57 years. [8]

Alice Pickering died on 22 November 1951 at 10 Florence Avenue, Sutton Coldfield aged 70 years of carcinomatosis and carcinoma of ovary. Her usual address was 2 Florence Avenue, Sutton Coldfield. Her death certificate further recorded Alice was the widow of Christopher Joseph Pickering, a groundsman. The informant was her son H V Pickering of 192 Orphanage Rd, Birmingham. [10]
