Autobiographical Sketch by Jesse Pickett Typewritten on newsprint by Jesse Pickett about 1930 (referencing the date his brother Caleb died as 4 years ago (Caleb died 1926). J. E. Pickett (Jesse) was born on the 28th day of February 1850, in Randolph County, Indiana, near the Jericho Quaker meeting house. The family was of English Quaker stock, with several generations of pre-revolutionary history. The original name, as it came from England was Piggott. Father's name was Benjamin1 the third in line to bear that name. He was born in North Carolina and brought to Indiana with his parents in 1832, when four years old. Mother's name was Nancy Smith. She also was from North Carolina coming to Indiana when 12 years old. She died I think in the early part of the year 1856. Two years later father married Martha Lawrence. Of children there were nine, five of the first marriage and four of the second. Of the five all were boys, James, Jesse, Nathan, Caleb and Daniel. Nathan died when about 10 years old. Caleb died four years ago. James lives in Warren, Indiana, Daniel near Eudora, Kansas. Of the second group, two were girls and two boys; Serena, (Mrs. Hiram Pickett) now living in Iowa, Albert who died in Kansas some twelve years ago, Winnie (Mrs. H. J. Painter) who died at Glendora, California about 17 years ago, and Cyrus L. of the Philippine Islands. The family lived in Randolph county till Sept. 1854 when it removed to Howard county, the same state. When mother died we returned to Randolph county and the children were scattered among relatives till the second marriage when all returned to the later home except Daniel--the baby--who remained with Grandmother Smith and was raised as her son. In 1864 we removed to Kansas where we settled first in Leavenworth county, near Tonganoxie. In 1868 we went to Lyon county buying a farm five miles west of Emporia. Two years I left home and went 'on my own.' Some years later the family, excepting James and I, moved to Cherokee county where both father and (step) mother died. Leaving home in 1868 I began to preach in the United Brethren church. The first year and a half my circuit was in Chase and Marion counties. January 1st 1870 I entered 'Lane University,' a little denominational would-be college of perhaps 30 pupils above the grammar school grade, though such methods of grading were then unknown, and two professors. The next year I quit school for is want of funds and was sent to a circuit in Allen and Woodson counties. After 18 months I resigned and later changed membership to the Christian church. Followed a period of some years that was not very steadily given to any one line of work. Conducted two newspapers for a brief period each, taught school several terms, studied and began the practice of law. I was admitted to the bar in 1874 in Barbour county. In 1876 was appointed county attorney of Woodson county and elected for a full term at the next election and served two years. Was defeated for re-election but after one term out was re-elected serving now two terms consecutively, six years in all. Was married in 1877, the 14th day of February, to Alma M. Chellis. Meantime I had been doing 'Sunday preaching' and in 1886 returned to a full time ministry. The summary of this work as I have it recorded for reference is as follows: March 1886 to July 1887, District Evangelist. July 1887 to April 1889, pastor at McPherson, Kansas. April 1889 to June 1890, State Evangelist. June 1890 to June 1892, pastor at Pittsburg Kansas. June 1892 to December 1895, pastor at Manhattan Kansas December 1895 to June 1901, pastor at Boulder Colorado June 1901 to October 1911, pastor Highlands church, Denver November 1911 to September 1913 pastor Modesto, California. October 1913 to October 1914 Pastor Orange, California. January 1915 to June 1917 pastor Rialto, California June 1917 to June 1918 pastor Arlington Church, Riverside Calif. June 1918 I retired permanently from the pastorate removing to Alhambra, California for a permanent home.
