Biography

James A Pickett was born about 1819 in Florida, United States.[1]
James likely married twice, first in 1840 to Lucinda Hogan[2] who died in 1876.[3]
After Lucinda died, James married Mary, also known as Polly.[4] James (age 60) and Polly (age 23) were still living in Jacksonville in 1880.[1]
James died on 16 November 1882,[5] leaving wife Mary "Polly" and six named children (most likely all the children of Lucinda):[6]
  • Joseph L Pickett
  • James A Pickett, Jr
  • Sarah Ann Turner, wife of Lemuel Turner
  • Lucinda Onerene Brown, wife of George Brown
  • Elizabeth Booth, wife of George Booth
  • Mary Ella Pickett
His son, Joseph, appeared in a Duval County court on 22 November 1882 to petition for Letters of Administration. James had died intestate. Joseph was appointed curator of the estate on 27 November and was granted Letters of Administration on 5 February 1883 after publication of the petition.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by James Pickett on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
Does anyone have details of James' life? I'm wondering whether he married and had children. One of the women I'm researching, Lucinda Orene/Orinina Pickett, was the daughter of James A and Lucenda Pickett from Duval County. Her mother's maiden name has been indexed as both Hogan and Hagan.

Could the James of this profile be the same man who married Lucenda H*gan and fathered Sarah, William, Joseph, James, Elizabeth, Mary, and Lucinda Orene/Orinina?
