Biography

Ann Picton was reputedly the daughter of Thomas Picton and an Unknown Mother. According to her biography posted on Wiki- Tree. She was born 1st May 1803 at Wilmaston in the old parish of Haroldston West Pembrokeshire Wales UK. But despite an extensive search I have not been able to find a baptism record for Ann. If Ann was born in 1803, it is possible that it was due to an extra marital relationship between Thomas (her reputed father) and an unknown woman. Ann’s father was married to Ann Harries sometime before 1802. That is when their first child was baptised at Haroldston West parish church. There were eight more children of Thomas and Elizabeth Picton baptsied at Haroldston West, from1802 through to 1826. An alternative probability is that she was adopted by Thomas and Ann, and may be a relation of some kind. But until evidence comes to light her birth will be a mystery.

The Marriage We have better luck with her marriage. We know that she married James Hughes on the 15th November 1833 at Marloes parish church Pembrokeshire. We know that James signed his name and Ann made her mark. The witnesses where William Davies and Patrick Vittle.

1841 and 1851 Census in Marloes Pembrokeshire Wales UK

Ann and James can be found on the 1841 and 1851 census for the parish of Marloes Pembrokeshire Wales UK. The 1841 simply lists the address as Marloes. With James and Ann at the family home are three of their children. These are Mary (b 1836) James (b 1838) and Elizabeth (b 1840). James is recorded as a (agricultural labourer) farm worker.

The 1851 census lists the family as living in Marloes village. James is still working on the farms, and is now aged 46 years of age. His place of birth is recorded as Marloes, and his date of birth is recorded as 1805. There are five of their children at the family. These are James, and Elizabeth, and three of the younger children, Francis (b 1842) Martha (b 1843) and Jane (b 1847).

According to the profile on Wiki- Tree, Ann Hughes died in September 1862 in Salt Lake City Utah USA. Her husband James died 1st March 1855 in St Louis Missouri USA. As yet I have not fully researched James Hughes. But I know that at least three of his children moved to the USA with their parents, James and Ann Hughes.

We know that Ann and James’s daughter Mary was a member of the LDS (Mormon) so I am assuming that both James and Ann, were also Mormons. But as stated I have not fully researched Ann or James.
