Disputed Parentage

This immigrant and his descendants are the subject of the 2nd of the 4 Pierce Genealogy books. Note that the Percy nonsense began in the 3rd book. There seems to be no reason to suspect the first two books of any worse than the usual handwaving.

The 1st book deals with John Pers of Watertown, plausibly identified with a known weaver of that name, of Norwich, England, who obtained permission to emigrate to Boston in 1637. Nothing is claimed about his parentage or ancestry, beyond the observation that the surname derives from the given name Piers.

The 2nd book (with Frederic Beech Pierce as lead author, though Frederick Clifton Pierce is heavily involved) sets this context and then claims "it is reasonable to suppose" that Thomas Pierce of Charlestown was a brother of the said John (throwing in Robert Pierce of Dorchester as a third brother). But there seems to be nothing to make this reasonable.

The book mentions a record from 23rd year of Elizabeth (1580-81) of this Norwich family. It cites "History of Norwich, Norfolk, England" which was not found and is instead: An Essay Towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Freebridge (concluded). North Greenhow. Happing. Holt. Launditch by Francis Blomefield (W. Miller, 1808)[7]

Unknown
had
Margaret Perse, sister of John Cony John Cony
Thomas Perse, s/o Margaret Humphrey Cony, s/o John
Peter Perse, s/o Thomas, cousin
and heir of Humphrey

The author further claims "it is reasonable to suppose" that the 3 supposed brothers were "of this family", though no attempt was made to say how they might connect.

Note the Thomas Perse named in this record is not claimed to be the immigrant himself (being evidently dead by 1581). But the internet has concocted a garbled version in which a Margaret Cony with made-up dates is made to be the immigrant's mother. (Actually it's not even certain that Margaret was a Cony, since she could be John's maternal half-sister.)

Alleged parents Richard Pierce and Margaret Coney were removed

Note this Thomas Pierce, of Charlestown, is sometimes confused with a later Thomas Pierce, of Woburn.

Does anyone know of any direct line male descendants of Thomas Pierce? Descendants of Thomas and Captain Michael Pierce share the same Y-DNA. However, there have been very few descendants of Thomas tested, and it appears the ones tested years ago are no longer living. If there are direct male line descendants I would like ask if they would take the Big-Y DNA test. It might be a long shot, but it might help to determine how Thomas and Michael were related. There was a new haplogroup, R-FT164037 that emerged around 1600. It was found that two of us who have lines back to Michael have this new haplogroup. Do Thomas's descendants have this new haplogroup?

Hi Michael and thank you.

Your post might be the basis for a great G2G. --Gene

That sounds good to me. I haven't done that before, so I not sure how that gets started.

Hi Michael,

There is more than one way to post on G2G. I usually either (1) use the "moved to G2G" link appearing at the bottom of your comment or (2) used the "Ask Question" button on the right side of the profile.

Using the "move to ..." link will create a title "Comment on ...." You can edit that title on the fly; you'll also be able to add tags to the post.

In either case, you can edit and add tags after the G2G is posted.

Hope this helps. --Gene (Who has. been working to sort our some early folks--Pearce, Peirce, Pierce, Pears ....)

Hi Michael,

I believe I am a descendant of Thomas Pierce. Happy to discuss further.

Since posting the message about haplogroup R-FT164037, one of the Thomas Pierce descendants did contact Brad Pierce of the Pierce DNA North Project, and took the Big Y-700 test. He does share that haplogroup. Two descendants of Michael had a further mutation around 1650, that resulted in a new haplogroup. The Thomas descendant did not share the new haplogroup, which would make sense, because that was after Michael's line split off from Thomas's other lines of descent.

He is PPP. Please sever association as parent of Daniel Pierce Sr. (1611-1677). Anderson reported no parents for Daniel.

In his profiling of Daniel in 2007, Robert Charles Anderson did not identify an origin or birth location for Daniel Pierce. No parent or sibling associations were commented upon.

posted by GeneJ X
In 2016, Daniel Pierce Sr. (1611-1677) was attached (again) as a son of Thomas and Elizabeth, then Thomas Profile was PPP in about 2018,

Comment to Daniel's profile show that these parents were severed from a to-be-merged profile of Daniel in 2014, and disputed associations comments appear on Daniel Pierce Sr. (1611-1677).

As Thomas and Elizabeth (Unknown) Pierce (abt.1596-aft.1667) are both PPP, might a leader sever their association with Daniel?

Middle name as "Carew" was recently added to his wife without adding supporting sources or collaborating. This change was reverted

Pierce-10922 and Pierce-565 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profile.
posted by Joe Cochoit
Can the Profile managers merge Pierce-3165 into Pierce-565?
In the Will of Thomas Pierce of Charlestown, date 7 Nov 1665, he mentions wife Elizabeth, 2 grand dau. Mary Bridge and Eliz. Jeffs and his son Jon. He died 7 Oct 1666.
Pierce-5791 and Pierce-3165 appear to represent the same person because: Exact same person. Please approve and before you complete the merge and execute be sure to reverse the direction of the merge itself. The larger numbered profile always merging into the lower numbered profile. Thanks for your help. I was researching the Pierce/Peirce line and came across the dupes. :-)
Pierce-3166 and Pierce-3165 appear to represent the same person because: These two appear to be duplicates and need to be merged. Please approve and merge if appropriate.
posted by Karen (Rollet) Lorenz
It would be great to complete the merge that has been postponed for 1.5 years. To do so, we'd need to disconnect the purported father. Christopher, you okay with that? (See notes on Pierce-565.)
posted by Jillaine Smith
No objections. Thanks
posted by Linda (Lisher) James
I do not believe there is any real basis for these parents. See Disputed parents section. Objections to disconnecting?

Needs=Research ? With the fraud involved, not much detail and lack of inline citations, this profile could use some research. He has no Anderson feature. GM Directory lists ChBOP 42; WoVR; Rodgers 2:340-43;

Pierce-565 and Pierce-5791 are not ready to be merged because: They are almost certainly intended to be the same person (same wife, same death), but there are some big discrepancies -- and they have different fathers from different parts of England. If we merge the sons before reconcilng the fathers, we'll end up with a "father" profile that's orphaned and lacks indication of why it was created.
posted by Ellen Smith
Pierce-565 and Pierce-5791 are not ready to be merged because: After seeing that the ancestries attached to these two people are radically different (and both seem to be questionable), I concluded that it is premature to attempt to merge these people.
