Note: FROM NOTES MADE BY EDWIN STEPHEN STOCKWELL , BORN 1842
Now I will attempt in as brief a manner as may be to relate a more or less authentic account of my Mother's side, with the understanding that like my Father's , there is considerable guess work especially with regard to dates, but it is the best I can do with the data at hand.
Let me introduce you to my Grandmother, Miss Amanda Pierce, who was born in the Lake Champlain country, New York, about the year 1790, and who , with her first cousin, Franklin Pierce, played together as children on the shores of Lake Champlain, little dreaming that he was destined to become (14th) President of the United States of America, at present , the greatest Nation the world has ever known. You are referred to any history of the United Sates for a more detailed record of hte Pierce family.
Miss Amanda Pierce married Larned Bush Rich , to whom children were born as follows: Darwin, Zina P., Ann, Larned Bush, Jr., Rowana, S.Weed, Arther D., Cornelia; Dates unknown.
Concerning my Grandfather, Larned Bush Rich: He was killed by lightning in middle age, 40-45 years. Little is known about him except that he was a strict disciplinarian, ruling his family with an iron rod, a customary practice in those days. Are we doing better these days? Doubtful. Anyway they, Grandfather and Grandmother, (mostly Grandmother) raised an exceptionally fine family of men and women.
