Biography

Birth and Early Life

Elizabeth G. Pierce was born on 1 December 1832 in Maryland, United States to Josiah Pearce (1786-1867) and Chloe Unknown (1789-1867).

Marriages and Family

She married twice.

  1. Eli Keeney on 24 February 1848 in Holt County, Missouri. After his death she married again.
  2. Samuel Holloway (1826-1908) in 1884. She was his second wife. His first wife was Luticia Ann Boggess who died in 1878.

Children of the Keeney-Pierce Marriage

The first two born in Holt County, Missouri and the rest were born in Lane, Oregon, United States.
  1. Mary Ellen Keeney was born on 26 February 1849 in Holt County, Missouri, United States. She married 1) Alvah D. Larkin (1834-1866) in 1865 and 2) Thomas Jefferson Matlock (1849-1923) in 1871. Mary died on 14 June 1903 in Heppner, Morrow, Oregon, United States.
  2. Frances Anna Keeney was born on 11 October 1850 in Holt County, Missouri, United States. She died near The Dalles on 20 August 1851 near present day Wasco, Oregon on the trip across the plains to the Oregon Territory. She was placed in a little wooden box and buried near the Columbia River. A large mound of stones was placed over the grave to discourage coyotes.
  3. Silas N. Keeney was born on 5 April 1854 in Lane, Lane, Oregon Territory. He married Elizabeth Nebraska Mathews (1853-1918) on 24 December 1880 in Lane County, Oregon according to the Early Oregonian Web search. Her first husband was D.B. Trimble. Silas died on 3 December 1922 in Lane, Lane, Oregon, United States.
  4. Jonathan T. Keeney was born on 3 January 1856 in Lane County, Oregon, United States. He died on 23 November 1916 in Springfield, Lane, Oregon, United States.
  5. Elizabeth Ruth Keeney was born on 20 February 1858 in Lane County, Oregon, United States. She died on 3 March 1926 in Eugene, Lane, Oregon, United States.
  6. Leathe E. Keeney was born on 11 October 1860 in Lane, Lane, Oregon, United States. She died on 26 March 1945 in Douglas, Oregon, United States.
  7. Minely J. Keeney was born on 19 July 1862 in Lane County, Oregon, United States. She died in the same place on 8 August 1862.
  8. Rose Keeney was born in 1867 in Lane, Lane, Oregon, United States. She died in the same place in 1872.

The Keeney Wagon Train

In April 1851 they set out with most of the remaining members of the Keeney family and assorted cousins and neighbors to travel the Oregon Trail for 2000 miles and almost six months over the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains and the Cascade Mountains to reach their new home of Oregon.

Her little daughter Frances was the only death on the trip.

Death

Elizabeth died on 31 January 1904 in Goshen, Lane, Oregon, United States at the age of 71. She was buried in the Keeney Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Lane, Oregon. Find A Grave: Memorial #38301013

Obituary

In The Oregonian on 1 February 1904: Mrs. Elizabeth Holloway. Eugene, Or., Jan. 31--(Special.) -- Mrs. Elizabeth Holloway, a pioneer woman, died yesterday at her home in Goshen at the age of 71 years. She was born in Maryland in 1832, emigrated to Missouri in 1841, where, in 1847, she was married to Eli Keeney with whom she came across the plains to Oregon in 1851, and settled on a donation claim near Cloverdale; the county. After the death of Mr. Keeney in the latter 70's, she was married in 1884 to Samuel Holloway, who survives her. She left four grown children by her first husband, Silas Keeney, of Portland; Mrs. Ruth Fletcher, of Pilot Rock, Umatilla County; John Keeney, of Goshen; Mrs. Leathe Rychard, of Thurston.
