Biography

1776 Project
John Pierce served with Massachusetts during the American Revolution.

John Pierce is believed to have been born 1757 in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay but no primary source documentation of his birth has been found.

A John Pierce of Rehoboth is found in Revolutionary War records[1]. Other records support the theory that this relates to this John Pierce and shows he served under various commands from April 1778 thru at least July 1780. His age varies in these records but implies a birth later than 1757 and gives a general description of 5 ft 3 in to 5 ft 4 with a complexion listed as "dark" or "ruddy."

He married Elizabeth Horton 30 Mar 1775 in Rehoboth with Elder Nathan Pearse presiding.[2][3] He appears in the US Census of 1830 residing in Swansea[4]. Other Census records which may be this John Pierce exist but this was a common name and there is no current way to differentiate between the census records without additional sources.

No record of his death has been located however a Will for a John Pierce appears in an NEHGS Massachusetts records index with a death date of 4 Dec 1832[5] and while it is not definitively proven that this document relates to this John Pierce, Revolutionary War pension records show a John Pierce with wife Elizabeth and a death date of 4 December 183__ with the last digit illegible due to a smudge.[6] His death is frequently seen as 1839 but there appears to be no documentation or evidence for that date.

A John Pierce Jr appears in immediate area records but it is not known if he is the son of this John Pierce.

Was looking for the following doc (source 6 above) and found a potential match on Roll 17 (link below) but couldn't find match on Roll 16. Do you have a link? The one I found on roll 17 shows death date of 27 Feb 1844. Can you point me to the one you found that indicates 4 December 183__ ? Thank you!!
