Hanibel Pierce was born as a slave on April 1, 1853 in Russell County, Kentucky. He was born in the household of Joel Pierce Jr. of that county. His birth record shows that Joel Pierce Jr. was the owner or father of Hanibel Pierce. After noting that the child was black, the county clerk concluded the birth record with a personal comment. This took me a while to decipher but reads as follows--
a slave, I guess he will never cross the alps
A brief history lesson gets to the bottom of this unusual comment.[1] "Hannibal, son of Hamilcar Barca (247 – 183/182/181 BC) was a Punic Carthaginian military commander, generally considered one of the greatest military commanders in history..... Hannibal lived during a period of great tension in the Mediterranean, when the Roman Republic established its supremacy over other great powers such as Carthage, the Hellenistic kingdoms of Macedon, Syracuse, and the Seleucid empire. One of his most famous achievements was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War when he marched an army, which included elephants, from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy. In his first few years in Italy, he won three dramatic victories—Trebia, Trasimene, and Cannae, in which he distinguished himself for his ability to determine his and his opponent's strengths and weaknesses, and to play the battle to his strengths and the enemy's weaknesses—and won over many allies of Rome. Hannibal occupied much of Italy for 15 years."
Hanibel moved to Missouri, perhaps with members of the Pierce family while in slavery. After the war as a free man he married his first wife, Harriet Kersey, in Polk County, Missouri. He later moved to Leavenworth, Kansas where he married his second wife Sarah Johnson. After a brief time in Kansas, he moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where he lived out the rest of his life.
Hanibel's life after slavery was punctuated by hardships. However, in spite of the county clerk's cynical comment at the time of Hanibel's birth implying a life to follow void of accomplishment, his life proved otherwise. I hope to include details of his life spent "crossing the alps".
