Biography

Frances “Fannie” Ascenath Pierce Kimmell, was born in Hannibal in 1843. Frances was one of ten children in a socially prominent family. The Pierce family home at 321 North Fifth Street in Hannibal was only a block from Clemens’ boyhood home. Edward, one of Frances’ brothers, was a playmate of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.

In July 1864, Fannie married Elijah Lloyd Kimmell, whom she met in St. Louis where he was working for a railroad. Elijah was born in Williams Center, Ohio in 1842 and was a Civil War veteran.

Children of Fannie and Elijah were: John Pierce Kimmell (1865 - 1881); Daisy Natalie Kimmell (1870 - 1872); Glendolene Myrtle Kimmell (1879 - 1949)

Daisy died in 1872, at two years of age. Elijah Kimmell died in February, 1881, and John Pierce died a month later than his father. After the loss of her husband and two children, Frances took their remaining child, Glendolene to her parent's home in Hannibal.

In 1913, Edward Gardner Lewis, the son of a New England Episcopal clergyman, had purchased the land, and hired experts in agriculture, engineering and urban planning to help him develop a planned community.

Around 1915, at 72 years of age, Frances decided to make a bold change in her life. She became one of the investors in Rancho Atascadero, a 23,000 acre colony near the central California coast. She determined to live in the "tent city" until her small clapboard bungalow was built, and Glendolene came to live with her.

Frances resided with her daughter in Atascadero until October 11, 1930, when Frances suffered a fatal heart attack in the yard of their home, while working in her flowerbeds.

A funeral service was held at the chapel of Gray's Funeral Home in Santa Ysabel, California on October 14, 1930. Glendolene then accompanied her mother's body back to Hannibal, by train, where a second funeral was held in the chapel of Smith's Funeral Home.

Fannie and Elijah are both buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Hannibal, Missouri
