Alexander Wilson Pierce was born 7 May 1814 In Sugar Grove, Wythe County, Virginia to Moses and Ellender Bird Pierce.
He grew up in the hills of Virginia in a cabin in the woods. His family worked in the iron mines and were prominent farmers.
His mother Ellender died in 1824 when Alexander was but 10 years old. In 1830 Census Alexander is living in Wythe Virginia. Census states that there was one male under 5, one male 20 to 29 which would presumably be Alexander, one female 30 to 39 and one female under five. (could this be a sister? he is living with?) and they had 4 slaves.
Alexander married Mary Ann Shupe on the 22nd of June 1936 in Sugar Grove.[1] Mary died in 1837 presumably after the birth of their child Mary who was born 17 May 1837. Mary Nancy Shupe died on June 1, 1837. Daughter Mary lived but two years and died 27 Jan 1839 at Sugar Grove.
