Note: Samuel was in the Fourth Tennessee Infantry which was recruited by Colonel Daniel Stover, at Louisville, KY in the spring of 1863. The unit was composed of exiles from East Tennessee. These soldierswere guided through Confederate Lines by scouts. Their marches through East TN to KY were made by night. Their days were spent hiding in caves and forests to escape capture by Confederate ConscriptOfficers. Carter County Book page 34.
