James Madison Pierson was 1 in the 1870 census. His birth date was 20 'December. This gives birth year of 1868. His death certificate says he was born 1878, and this is wrong. He was not the son of of Evan Pierson. All records indicate that Evan died in 1858. That is 10 years before JMP was born. I am working with other descendants to try to figure out his father using DNA. He was also not the son of a Robert Pierson. There is no Robert Pierson in that area at that time.
James Madison Pierson was listed as the father of Annie Ethel Pierson who was born October 23, 1906 in Cashiers, Jackson County, North Carolina. The mother was listed as Alice Collins.[1]
James Madison Pierson is buried at Catheys Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Rosman, Transylvania County, North Carolina.[2]

There was no Roderick Evan Pierson. The man Rebecca married was Evan Pierson. Roderick was her father's name. Evan died in 1858. He died 10 years before James was born. If everyone thinks they have the name of my 2nd GGFs father, then nobody is looking. Please change Evan to remove Roderick from his name, and disconnect him from James Madison Pierson. He died 10 years before james was born.

The children found in the home of Rebecca Norton Pierson that were born after 1860 have been extremely difficult to figure out. They are not all Rebecca's children. Grave information says that Erbany was the dughter of Jeremiah Pierson, Rebecca's oldest son. Obituary information lists one sister, Mary Towe. She was raised by Rebecca Pierson, but her father was actually John C. Burriss Norton, Rebecca's youngest brother, according to her deth certificate. There are some members of the local family who say that for a time in the 1860's a McCoy was living with Rebecca, but she refused to marry him and he left before 1870. Those folks say Erbanie and James Madison Pierson were his children. But I have no McCoy relatives that I can find by DNA that would indicate that. James Madison Pierson's death certificate says his father was Robert Pierson, but I have researched this and can find no merit in it. There were no Robert Piersons in Evan Pierson's family, and a Robert Pierson from a different family thaat was close enough was much younger and is not a genetic ,match. The death certificate information for JMP was provided by his son Claude Burnitt Pierson in 1946. That is 90 years after Evan supposedly died. Family lore says that his name was Roderick Evan Pierson, but all official documents list his name only as Evan. I suspect that "Robert" was CB's attempt at "Roderick". There is no other mention of a Robert Pierson ANYWHERE in the family. The story is that Evan died in 1858. I have found no death information for him but am not related to any Pierson family that I can find other than the children of Rebecca Norton Pierson.
So, at this time the father of James Madison Pierson is unknown. My condolences to you regarding the recent loss of your grandmother. My main tree is on Ancestry if you would like to take a look. It is public, and the main tree is Mark Timothy Ramsey M.D.

Thanks for the information and the condolences. I tried to find you on Ancestry but while there are several Mark Ramseys I couldn't find a Mark Timothy Ramsey MD. My Ancestry is under Kathleen Linker. I have several trees but the only one public is the one linked to my DNA. That is the one that is error-free for the most part through the first five generations. I manually add those ancestors and do not accept any hints. I have a Bradshaw tree but it has a lot of junk in it that I need to weed through. It is an ongoing process. I accepted way too many hints in my early years.
