Biography

Baptized 6 August 1634 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England.

Weaver.

Came to Branford, CT about 1661.

Thomas was one of the signers of Heads of Families at Branford Oct. 30, 1666, that agreed to move to Newark, New Jersey. Accordingly that fall, with Rev. Abraham Pierson at their head, they went to Newark.

Homestead lot of "six acres which ran from High Street to Brick Lane". A map of the lots of the first residents of Newark indicates his lot in the northwest section. [1]

Records of 1676 show he was one of the first settlers of Watsessing (now Bloomfield).

He is a nephew to Rev. Abraham Pierson and was associated with him at Newark, NJ. Thomas took his six acre home-lot (to which each settler was entitled) on what is now the center of the city of Newark, N.J. He was made townsman, 1677, constable, 1679, and grand juryman, 1680. Thus, while Abraham Pierson led the band of emigrants in their spiritual interest, Thomas was active in discharging official duties. He is said to have appraised the property of Rev. Abraham Pierson in 1678, whose will he witnessed, 1668.

His own will is dated 1698, and was proved in 1701. Will dated January 12, 1697/8 and proved March 1, 1700/1 names his children Samuel, Thomas the youngest son, Hannah, Abigail, Mary, and Elizabeth. Executor was his son(-in-law) Samuel Lyon. (NJA 21:326). Samuel Lyon is husband of Mary.

Pierson-133 and Pierson-66 do not represent the same person because: Very different profiles: parents, dates, spouses, children do not match.

This Thomas Pierson's father and son are both named Samuel Pierson Sr. Is that correct?
That is correct. Both men had sons named Samuel.

According to Pierson Millennium by Richard E. and Jennifer Pierson (1997), the Thomas Pierson who married Maria Harrison came from Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England and was the son of Rev. Samuel Pierson Pierson-567. I would love to discuss and compare resources.

merge completed (Pierson-66 and Pierson-279); same wife & dates close enough (it appears Pierson-279 has more accurate information).
