At the time of the 1850 US Census, Melita (or "Melitta" or "Metilda") is living with her parents in Cabell County, Virginia [sic]. Her last name is given as "Richie" which matches the surname she gives when she marries Thomas Sumere in 1854. (see below) Her marital status is not indicated, and her birth place is given as Virginia.[1]
Melita marries Thomas Summers on 26 April 1854 in Cabell County, Virginia [sic]. The record gives her last name as "RIchey" and her parents' names as "James Pinnell" and "Phebe." It also indicates that both she and Thomas are widowed. The transcription of this record gives Melita's birth place as "Greenbrier County, Pennsylvania, USA," which contradicts the 1850 Census.[2][3]
At the time of the 1860 Census, Melita and Thomas are living in Putnam County, Virginia.[4]
In 1870, Melita and Thomas are living in West Virginia. Also in the household is Perry M. Richey, age 13. No relationships are given, but Richey was Melita's first husband's last name.[5]
