He enlisted (Serial #339 86 15) in the U. S. Navy on 4 August 1947, and served aboard the USS Cavalier (APA-37) as a recruit and Fireman. He was honorably discharged on 20 December 1949 at the San Diego Naval Training Station. He was returning home from San Diego by car when he picked up a hitchhiker. He did not arrive at home, and the F.B.I. became involved in the investigation into his disappearance. He was last seen alive in Globe, Arizona on January 13th, and his abandoned car was found in El Paso, Texas on January 15th. About July 4th, 1950, a partially decomposed body was found in an arroyo eight miles west of Fairacres, New Mexico, about 1/2 mile off of U. S. Highway 71, and it was identified as Dean. In the timeline reconstruction, it was estimated that Dean was murdered about January 14th, and he was most probably killed near the burial site.
The body was sent home to Montrose, Illinois for burial.
