Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Thomas Pittman IV was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas was the great-grandchild of the immigrant Captain Thomas Pitman. His father was Thomas, and his grandfather was also Thomas.

He was born about 1684 in Surry County, Virginia. One of the ways his birth date can be pinpointed is by the tax records (tithables), and he shows up in these in 1700, implying that he was about sixteen at the time of these records [1] [2].

Thomas married Elizabeth Lancaster, daughter of Robert Lancaster; in Surry County in about 1704.

Thomas named 14 children, 2 boys still minors, when his will was written in 1728 (probated in 1730) [3] and/or the will of his father in-law, Robert Lancaster:

  1. Thomas
  2. Samuel
  3. Robert
  4. Ambrose
  5. John
  6. Arthur
  7. Sampson
  8. Joseph
  9. Ann
  10. Olive
  11. Pratta
  12. Elizabeth
  13. Lucy
  14. Faith
  15. Lettis

He died before 28 Sep 1730, when his will was presented in court in Isle of Wight County [4].

Research Notes

With at least five generations of men with the given name Thomas, it's no wonder that many of the records are conflated. At times, at least three generations were living simultaneously. This Thomas apparently lived and died in Virginia. His son Thomas apparently migrated to North Carolina.

Olive (Pitman) Fort was attached as a daughter along with other possibilities of parents. She was removed as the daughter then added back on the basis of being named in Thomas' will.

A Thomas had a will that was probated 28 Sep 1730, naming children Thomas, Samuel, Robert, Ambrose, John, Arthur, Samson, Joseph, Ann, Olive, Pratta, Elizabeth, Lucy and Faith.

At least some of his children can be found from names in his will and that of his father in-law, Robert Lancaster.

Robert Lancaster/Lanquishear left a will that was probated 23 May 1720 in which he named son in law Thomas Pitman and daughter Elizabeth Pitman; also grandchildren Lettis, Samuel and Ann. Thomas4 had other children by 1720, but presumably these three were old enough to receive personal property from an estate. Perhaps the oldest children of Thomas.

Unplaced note: The marriage was recorded in 1720.[5] They were thought to be Charity's great-grand parents. [6]

DNA

There are a number of patrilineal descendants who have results in the CTP DNA Study. From the Y DNA a branch tree has been built that can be used to help test theories about which Thomas is which. This Thomas is currently thought to be the person at the BY57632 node on the branch tree. See "Group A" chart of Pittman Project Background page.
Also, with a number of people claiming to be descendants and having DNA results on gedmatch, some collaborative study of the autosomal DNA should be possible.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

If his father was Thomas II, wouldn't this one be III instead of IV?

But, with that said, I think I see the problem. Other sites have another Thomas between the Thomas II and Thomas IV here on Wiki. He is Thomas Pitman / Pittman III* 1658–1725 BIRTH 1658 • Surry County , Virginia, Colonial America DEATH 24 MAR 1725 • Surry County, Province of Virginia, Colonial America

Geni shows this for him: Thomas Pitman, III Gender: Male Birth: 1653 Surry, Surry County, Virginia, British Colonial America Death: March 24, 1725 (71-72) Isle of Wight, Colonial Virginia (Will proved 1730) Immediate Family: Son of Lt. Thomas Pitman, II and Sarah Pittman (Basye) Husband of Hanna Fielding and Mary Pittman (Chambers) Father of Thomas Pitman, IV of Meherrin River; Arthur Pittman; Ambrose Pittman; Robert Pittman; Olive Pittman and 16 others Brother of William Pitman; Susannah Pitman and John Pittman

The Pittman connections on Geni have long been a mess though and in spite of lengthy discussions over the years on there, I still think they have errors. For example, there is no source for the Sarah Basye connected as his mother on Geni. So I don't think Wiki or Geni have the family connections correctly documented and connected.

Elizabeth is listed as wife of Thomas Pittman (father AND son, which is unlikely).

Research is needed to determine correct spouse Thomas Pittman. Pittman-318 1661-1730 -or- Pittman-317 1684-1754

Elizabeth has one child Joseph 1724-1786, whose father is Pittman-317, son of Pittman-318.

Pittman-317 has a marriage in 1720 to Annie Coffield-5 (marriage info on Annie's profile from myheritage).

PIttman-318 has a marriage in 1720 to Elizabeth, but the source for that info gives no dates for the people involved, so it could easily be for either Thomas Pittman.

All of the children on Pittman-317 are connected to Annie Coffield, other than Joseph, son of Elizabeth, so it looks like Elizabeth should probably only be connected to Pittman-318, changing father of Joseph

There are alignment/discrepancy issues with these, too, but the combination may help compute which wife goes with which generation and how to number the Thomases. Geni counts Thomases I-IV, but then also has II and III as brothers, who are likely a sequence, instead.

and

and this downstream Joseph, included in one of them [ https://www.geni.com/people/Joseph-Pittman/6000000028165544814 ] is the same as this Findagrave [ https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=89989426 ]. I compute Elizabeth Lancaster as that Joseph's grandmother. Eventually, process of elimination seems to sort the Thomases and wives.

These aren't "sources," but alignm

Hi Jacob, Go back to Pittman-1252 and check the spreadsheet that I put together from published tithable records. The sources for the 1st 3 generations of Pittmans in Surry County are there in the PDF titled "17th-century Pittmans in Tithables records of Surry County."

This profile and Pittman-317 could possibly be the same person. They are married to the same named woman, lived in the same places, died in the same year. The only thing substantially different are the birth years. Pittman-317's is 1684, while this profile is 1704. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

I agree that the birthdates are rather apart. I don't see any sources there to check for Pittman-1942. The death years are the same, as well as the death years for the spouses (which all happen to be 1754 - strange), as well as the locations. But for the birth year, it seems they would represent the same person. I will post a question explicitly asking about the birthyear on Pittman-1942. Thanks

Jacob, because of the great difference in birthdates (an entire generation), I'm unconvinced that your Thomas III is the same as mine. Let me study this a bit more and I'll respond further. The "Thomas question" in the Pitman lineage has been discussed for a decade. I'll get back to you. Laurie

Pittman-1942 and Pittman-317 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles seem to represent the same person. The birth dates are different , but they have same named spouses and lived in the same place.

The Thomas Pittman who married Anne Coffield c 1728 was born c 1704 in Isle of Wight County, VA and died after 4/4/1754.

That would make this Thomas Pittman the father of the man who married Anne Coffield. My records show this Thomas Pittman (yes, III) was bc 1679 in Surry County VA and dc 1730 in Isle of Wight County VA.
