Andrew J. Pitts traveled with his parents to KY from TN, then to MS and finally to MO. Andrew J. and his wife, lived in Hickory Co., MO the remainder of their lives. All of their 10 children were born and raised near Pittsboro, Hickory Co., MO.
Andrew enlisted as a private in the Union Army at Hermitage, MO in the Osage Battalion of the MO Home Guards about July 1, 1861, and was relieved about December 20, 1861 in Jefferson City. He then enlisted in Company H, 47th regiment of the Enrolled MO Militia at Linn Creek, July 29, 1862. He was commissioned First Lieutenant, August 29, 1862.
The first time Andrew came home after he enlisted in Company H, his grandmother, Nancy (HOLLAND) Pitts, insisted on sewing a silver eagle on his uniform. It was the emblem that Major Burrell Pitts, his grandfather, had worn in the War of 1812. Because this silver was not the insignia of a First Lieutenant, he could not wear it on his uniform where it was visible but to please his grandmother he let her sew it on the inside of his coat and he wore it until he was honorably discharged December 12, 1864. The eagle is a prized family keepsake.
