Biography

At age 18, he enlisted in the Confederate army, on 01 Mar 1864. He was a Private in the 35th North Carolina Infantry regiment, Company D, also known as the Haw River Boys. They were involved in much of the bloodiest fighting along the eastern seaboard. A roster of Prisoners of War, at an unknown Union facility, says that he was captured at Petersburg on 17 Jun 1864, initially held in Washington, then released on 19 Jun 1865.

The 1880 United States Census says that he was "crippled or bedridden"; there is nothing to identify a specific service-related injury, but it is likely that he was left with a permanent partial disability.

He was a farmer. He appears to have died as a result or oral cancer, and his burial was in the Love's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina, United States.
