Biography

George Poindexter II[1] is believed to be born about 1650 on the Isle of Jersey.

Two potential dates of death have been reported for George:

March 12, 1716 at Christ Church Parish, New Kent County, Virginia Colony[1][2] or July 6, 1737.

Research Notes

  • George was probably born in Jersey; possibly in England. Was with his father in VA in 1664. Tradition says brought with his father in 1657. Others have estimated his birth as 1660, some 10 years later.
  • Date of marriage is based on birth of oldest child.
  • The Poindexter book has the date of deaths for George II and his son reversed.
  • Mrs. Sarah Marston is shown to be the first spouse of Stephen Cocke in Genealogies of Virginia Families from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume II, page 116. Since she is shown as Mrs. Sarah Marston which would lead one to think that she was a widow of an Unknown Marston.
  • There is a footnote which shows: There was at this time a Marston Parish in James City county. In 1702 William Marston was sheriff of James City county. Frances Bena-skin, daughter of Henry Benskin of England (died 1692) married William Marston of James City and her son, Benskin was sheriff of Charles City 1747. Benskin was a name in the Lightfoot family. There is a note under the Poindexter Family shows George Poindexter and Susanna his wife (probably daughter of Benskin Marsden). They named a son George Benskin Poindexter.
  • Stephen Moone patented 178 acres in New Kent in St. Peter's Parish adj James Moss, Edwd. Asline & George Poindexter on Tonyhalin Swp. 23 Dec 1714.[3]
  • Thomas Butts patented 258 acres in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co adj John Winfree, the Glebe land, on Discun & Rumley Marsh swamps; up Poindexter's Mill Run 27 Sep 1729.[4]
  • A George Poindexter is credited for building Criss Cross Plantation. It could be his father: "Criss Cross is a Colonial style brick house built about 1690 by George Poindexter in New Kent County, Virginia. It is similar in style to neighboring Foster's Castle. George Poindexter was the immigrant founder of the Poindexters in America. Originally from Jersey, he settled his family in the Virginia Colony.[5]

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 appear to represent the same person because: same mother, same father, same grave

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 are not ready to be merged because: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/L6V2-XQM cannot figure out if these are same person or not....

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 appear to represent the same person because: same find a grave on both profiles. exact same parents on both profiles. Need to come to some concensus on birth and death dates. Lacking any true sources you should just use the dates on find a grave to start with.

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 are not ready to be merged because: Both profiles should be re-examined. The death dates are inconsistent and it appears two or more individuals are being conflated in the profiles.

Poindexter-603 and Poindexter-10 appear to represent the same person because: Created Poindexter-603 in error before noticing there already was a profile.

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 are not ready to be merged because: I can't determine if these are duplicates--not enough info on 164. The children are not the same and 164 has no parents listed.

Poindexter-164 and Poindexter-10 appear to represent the same person because: Variation in dates can be explained by birthdate being an estimate and because of variations in secondary sources.
