Philipp was born on 14 July 1515 in Stettin, Pommern, Heiliges Römisches Reich (today Szczecin, Poland). He was the son of Georg von Pommen-Wolgast and Amalie von der Pfalz.
Born as the only surviving son of Duke Georg, from his first marriage to Amalie von der Pfalz († January 6, 1525), he received his further education at the court in Heidelberg with his uncle Elector Ludwig V von der Pfalz, after his mother's death in 1526.
After the death of his father, he took over the official duties in Stettin at the age of 16. With his uncle, Duke Barnim IX, he divided the Duchy of Pomerania on October 21, 1532, and he received Pommern-Wolgast (Western Pomerania). The division was initially only limited to nine years and was not confirmed permanently until 1541.
Duke Philipp married Maria von Sachsen († January 7, 1583), daughter of Johann des Beständigen von Sachsen, in Torgau on February 27, 1536. Martin Luther gave the sermon.[1] In 1554, Philip had this event idealized on the Croÿ carpet.[2]
They had seven sons and three daughters:
Philipp died before reaching the age of 45 on 14 February 1560 in Wolgast, Herzogtum Pommern-Wolgast, Heiliges Römisches Reich.
He was buried in the duke's crypt in the St.-Petri-Kirche in Wolgast. His epitaph consists of a brass casting by Wolfgang Hilliger from Freiberg. The retable-like inscription panel with the seven Pomeranian coats of arms is decorated by a Renaissance ornament of plants and figural grotesques.
