Samuel W. Pond was born in 1808 in a small section of Washington called New Preston, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He was the son of Elnathan Judson Pond and Sarah Hollister. [1]

He, along with his younger brother Gideon Hollister Pond were early missionary among the Sioux in Minnesota. He was converted to Christianity in the New England revival of 1831 and headed west in the spring of 1833 to labor as a missionary. While on his journey, in Galena, Illinois, he heard of a "wild and roving tribe of Indians who dwelt on the vast prairies... in ignorance of the true faith." With these natives in mind, he wrote to his brother, Gideon, who united with him in the spring of 1634. The two went via the steamer Warrior to Fort Snelling, arriving May 6. They established missions on the shores of Lake Calhous and Lake Harriet.[1]

Samuel return to Connecticut for education and in March 1837 he was ordained and given the Missionary appointment by his church. By November he was back in Minnesota where he married Miss Cordelia Eggleston at the Lake Harriet Mission Station.[1]Cordelia (Eggleston) Pond died in 1852.[2]

Chief Little Six, or Shakopee, invited Samuel Pond to live with his band at Tintatonwan (now called Shakopee), which he accepted. Here he spend the rest of his missionary carreer until the Dakota's removal in 1852. Following that he ministered to settlers in the Shakopee region. By 1857 he was living in Shakopee, with a wife named Susan, born in Connecticut, and children - all born in Minnesota - Jennette C. Pond age 15, Rebeca age 13, Ed Pond age 10, Samuel W. Pond age 7.[3]

The 1860 census has Samuel, age 52 with his wife Susan R., age 51, along with children: Jennette C. age 18, Mary R. age 15, Elnathan J age 12, Samuel age 10.[4] In 1866 Samuel retired from the ministry but remained in the Shakopee vicinity..

In 1880 he and his wife Susan Rebecca were ages 72 and 71 respectively and living with their son Judson Elnathan in Eagle Creek, Scott County, Minnesota.[5]
