Biography

NOTE -- the material below is based on a reliable source and gives Robert's wife as Ann and only son as Samuel. It would seem that a wife Susan and son Edward would be a different family.

Birth and Parents

Robert Poole, born January 31, 1708/9 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, was the second but first surviving son of Richard and Johannah (Duvall) Poole. [1]

Return to England

Robert Poole was sent by his parents to England, presumably at a young age. He settled in the Parish of St. Mary islington, County Middlesex, England. [1]

Career

Robert Poole became a doctor of medicine.

Marriage to Anne Gower

On September 9, 1742 he married Anne, the daughter of Sir Edmund Gower, Knt, of the Parish of St. Mary White Chapel, Middlesex. [1]

1748 Will

His last will is dated September 13, 1748. He names his wife, three young children, and father. [1]

1768 Recovery of Father's Maryland Estate

In 1768 Robert's son Samuel Gower Poole, who was a sugar refiner of Collidge Hill, London, attempted to recover his father's estate in Maryland. [1] A series of affidavits made before the Lord Mayor of London assert that Dr. Robert Poole of Goodmansfields was born in the Province of Maryland, died in 1752, that Samuel Gower Poole born 26 July 1748 was his son, [1]

The estate was left to the heirs of the body of Johanna Duvall Poole in fee tail, meaning that after her death, her husband Richard Poole Sr had the right of curtesy, meaning here a life estate in the property, but he did not own it and could not alienate it; upon his death ownership would pass to his eldest living son, who in this case would be Dr. Robert Poole, and should he be deceased, Robert's eldest son Samuel. [1]

On April 20, 1773, Mareen Duvall of Prince George's County, Planter, conveyed to Samuel Gower poole,, of London, "who was the eldest son and heir-at-law of Dr. Robert Poole late of London deceased and which said Dr. Robert Poole was the eldest son and heir of Richard Poole and Johannah his wife late of the Province of Maryalnd and said Johanna was the daughter of Mareen Duvall, deceased." Whereas Mareen Duvall had taken possession of Larkin's Choice containing 311 acres in Anne Arundel which is the estate and inheritance of the said Samuel Gower Poole of London, and whewreas MareenDuvall had delivered...possession thereof to Thomas Harwood, attorney for Samuel Gower Poole:. The consideration so expressed in the deed was five shillings. [1]

On December 30, 1774, Samuel Gower Poole, son and heir at law of Dr. Robert Poole, late of Godmansfield conveyed "Duvall's Range of 200 acres, and "Larkin's Choice" of 311 acres to Thomasw Harwood, of the City of Annapolis, for L500. [1]
