Biography

Alexander Pool (almost all documents use "POOL" rather than "POOLE" for Alexander Pool (Jr.) ) was born in Elizabeth City County VA. He is mentioned in his father's Will. He was also mentioned in his cousin Samuel's will, and was in line to inherit the "Points" if his cousin Anne had died young.

We assume that he remained in Elizabeth City until he became an adult, and then migrated, likely with other family members. We know that by around 1750 he had moved to Brunswick VA where he married a Susanna . Based on the date , knowledge of affiliated families, and that the given name has to be Susanna, Susanna "Sukie" Mitchell . (strong supporting evidence for this is included in Susanna Mitchell's profile).

NOTE: If any Wikitree genealogists have any early documentation on Alexander Pool please add the information and references. We think it likely that he migrated with other Poole / Pool family and /or allied family members.

Research Notes

  • DNA confirmation of Alexander (Jr.) as father to James and Alexander Pool III
  • Recent autosomal (2016, 2017) DNA matches between Descendants of James Pool and Alexander Pool III has positively confirmed what our key documents showed, and this profile lists, namely: That Alexander Pool is indeed the father of James and Alexander Pool III.

This Alexander Pool, Jr was FATHER TO JAMES AND ALEXANDER POOL(III). All known "Alexander Poole / Pool" men from the ECC VA Poole line were reviewed (6 candidates); of the 6, 1 proved to be invalid (non existant, genealogist error that got accepted and repeated), and 4 were ruled out because of documented evidence (see notes below); leaving this Alexander Pool (son of Alexander Pool Sr) as the only remaining candidate.

It is recognized that this is an awkward and weaker proof. I and others continue to search for additional records. . Additional direct or indirect documentation would be greatly appreciated.

The following is considered "supportive" of the ancestry links as shown in the wikitree.com file.: Alexander Pool III named two of his children with the same names as Wm Hudson's Children (Cairy and Polly). The odds of this being "mere chance" are very low, and I think it add confirming evidence that we have chosen correctly in choosing Alexander as father to James Pool.

Please take note that this Alexander remains the only identified candidate for the father of James Poole who was not ruled out because of conflicting data (it is recognized that this is a weak proof.

a) all other Alexander Pool men identified can be ruled out b) although very little documentation has been found on this Alexander Poole - the fact that he is not shown in ECC VA or Johnston / Wake NC increases the chance that this Alexander who went to Brunswick Va then Mecklenburg is the father of James and Alexander Pool c) the number of generations to a common ancestor is so far out that a) the probability of an even more distant connection is an extremely y low probability (since Roy Poole and I are perfect 64 marker matches, we have around a 95% probability of common ancestor at the distance of Thomas Poole or earlier ( Thomas would be 8 generations back for me, assuming this Alexander Poole is indeed my correct link).

ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE OF LINK OF THIS LINE TO THE DAVID POOLE LINE OF VA, many of whom migrated to Wake and Johnston NC There are close family connections in the David Poole line which we still see later in the Alexander Pool, Jr descendants line. Bagwell is one example. Alonzo Pool died in Wake in the home of a Bagwell (1905), Wm H Pool II first business partner in Greenville SC was a Bagwell and the company was called Pool and Bagwell. Mitchell is another name that links both lines and DNA "cousins" (identical or nearly identical Y chromosome matches)

wtp notes Children (note these date estimates by Donna Cuzze, if this is "our Alexander Poole", birth year should be earlier-- AEP had an earlier date range for the boys (1700-1720 or so) which would be a better "fit" 1. see Middleton Poole's will... he left The Points Plantation to his wife, then upon her death to his daughter Ann, with Reversion to Alexander (JR) son of Alexander. Since Alexande Jr. r and sons Alexand III and James were living in Mecklenburg VA when Alexander Jr died in about 1767 -- and not living on the Points Plantation, I think we can safely assume that Ann Poole, daughter of Middleton Poole, was still alvie in 1767.

Note that a number of researchers, including Donna Cuzze, Joe Slattery, and others have also looked at this issue, and I have the benefit of their excellent work). )John Pool Sr > Thomas Poole, Sr > Alexander Pool -- ruled out because this Alexander died in 1742 in Elizabeth City , VA. b) John Pool Sr >William Pool Sr > Alexander Poole. c)John Pool Sr > William Pool Sr > Alexander Pool Sr > Alexander Pool , Jr. d)John Pool, SR >William Poole Sr > George Poole > Alexander Pool. (currently eliminated, no such person is shown to have existed, possible researcher "typo") I e) John Poole SR > Thomas Poole Sr > Alexander Pool >Alexander Pool f) some other "Alexander Poole" { Donna Cuzze and I searched for any other Alexander Pool / Poole men that met the needed criteria. We found no additional candidate(s)-- eliminated (will re evaluate if new candidates are found)

ALEXANDER POOL JR, THE FATHER OF JAMES POOLE: CRITERIA THAT MUST BE MET

a) must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756 b) must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there. c) (Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is accepted as proven) must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole. d) must be born in a year compatible with James' birth in 1756 e) must not be a person whose DNA is identified by familytreedna as belonging to a different line of Pool /Poole. f) assuming this is the same Alexander who was living in Brunswick in 1761 (likely because James was born there in 1756) -- wife's name was Susannah.

We know that when Alexander Pool,( father of James B Pool and Alexander Pool, Jr) died, he died intestate. We presume that no other family was there. The boys were bound out to the Ragsdale family.

Alexander Pool Poole is proved as the father of James Pool by the extensive record research by Belva Cauthen, and confirmed by several others

This Alexander is recorded by the Church Wardens (who held quasi official status). Belva shows that this Alexander Pool seems to be closely associated with "affiliated" families that lived in the same areas of VA and witnessed each others documents. My Hudson line . Ragsdate line, and Belva's Harris like are among the closely associated families. I have included a large selection of Belva's extensive notes in my"Descendants of James Pool" family tree file. In addition, James Pool's sworn testimony (Rev War Pension Application) says he was born in Mecklenburg in 1756-- and there is an Alexander Pool / Poole shown to be living there in 1755-1761. Alexander Poole died intestate, so we lack a "Will" document Both Alexander and James Pool were bound out to (different) Ragsdales. wtp 8/2010

Alexander Poole, s/o Alexander Poole, bound out to Richard Ragsdale, 1767 Alexander Poole's estate sale money to go to Churchwardens, St.James Par. 1770 James Poole, orphan of Alexander Pool, bound out to Benjamin Ragsdale, 1770; to be bound out again 1776 by Ch'ward.

Samuel Poole's 1747 will noted that he had brothers James, Alexander, Nicholas , and David Samuel*^ Poole b: Bet. 1700 - 1720 in VA, Elizabeth City got the plantation d: Bet. 1747 - 1752 in VA, ECC left will Will: 1747 Said he had brothers James, Alexander

recently ( 2012) a 67 marker match has been made to a Poole / Pool line that claims descent from John Poole Sr, born between 1629 and 1637 In Elizabeth City County VA. Since then several other Pool /Poole lines have claimed this line, and some are now (2013) obtaining Y chromosome DNA data {2013 update, I now have clear document trail now ties this JOHN POOL to his father DAVID POOLE, A FRENCH HUGUENOT WHO IMMIGRATED TO VIRGINIA IN ABOUT 1620}.

Remarks for future research. Since the Mitchell's appear to be relatively well off; and since there is some evidence of other related Pool family in the area[ it is unclear why the Pool boys would be bound out to the Ragsdales unless they also were relations to the Pool's. Information to clarifiy this from other Wikitree genealogists would be sincerely appreciated.

see Middleton Poole's will... he left The Points Plantation to his wife, then upon her death to his daughter Ann, with Reversion to Alexander (JR) son of Alexander. Since Alexander Jr. r and sons Alexander III and James were living in Mecklenburg VA when Alexander and we can safely assume that Ann Poole, daughter of Middleton Poole, was still alive in 1767. --- THIS IS THE BEST OF THE CANDIDATES FOR FATHER TO JAMES AND ALEXANDER POOL. ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION IS NEEDED for positive proof, but may not exist. Note All other Alexander Pool men identified can be ruled out except for the proposed Alexander , son of George ( there's no solid evidence that Alexander son of George even existed)

In addition to a strong document trail, confirming evidence is that we have Alexander SR / Alexander III / James Pool relation right is the fact that Alexander III named two of his daughters Cairy and Polly. Cairy (with several alt spellings including Cary) is an unusual name, and the odds of the same combination of names by random chance has to be low. You will note that the frequent co-signing of legal documents by Alexander Pool and William Hudson adds additional support for the close relationships between these two families.

• although very little documentation has been found on this Alexander Pool(e) - the fact that he is not shown in ECC VA or Johnston / Wake NC increases the chance that this Alexander who went to Brunswick VA then Mecklenburg is the father of James and Alexander Pool

• the number of generations to a common ancestor is so far out that a) the probability of an even more distant connection has a very low calculated probability (since Roy Poole and I are perfect 64 marker matches, we have around a 95% probability of common ancestor at the distance of Thomas Poole or earlier ( Thomas would be 8 generations back for me, assuming this Alexander Poole is indeed my correct link).

IF THIS IS THE FATHER OF JAMES POOLE, THEN WE BELIEVE WE KNOW THE FOLLOWING ABOUT ALEXADER POOLE Facts that have to fit to be the "right" Alexander Poole • must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756

• must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there. • Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is valid, must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole. • must be born in a year compatible with James' birth in 1756 • must not be a person whose DNA is identified by familytreedna as belonging to a different line of Pool /Poole. • assuming this is the same Alexander who was living in Brunswick in 1761 (likely because James was born there in 1756) -- wife's name was Susannah.

Here is a list of 6 possible "candidates" for the father of James and Alexander that I looked at (Donna Cuzze, Joe Slattery, and others have also looked at this issue, and I have the benefit of their work). )John Pool Sr. > Thomas Poole, Sr. > Alexander Pool -- ruled out because this Alexander died in 1742 in Elizabeth City , VA.

b) John Pool Sr. >William Pool Sr. > Alexander Poole.

c)John Pool Sr. > William Pool Sr. > Alexander Pool Sr. > Alexander Pool , Jr. d)John Pool, SR >William Poole Sr. > George Poole > Alexander Pool. ( currently eliminated, I have no solid evidence that George had a son named Alexander)

• John Poole SR > Thomas Poole Sr. > Alexander Pool >Alexander Pool • some other "Alexander Poole" that we don't currently have identified (certainly possible, however probably would be a more distant connection, and the probable distance to a common ancestor , as provided by familytreedna would make this significantly less probable).

Facts that have to fit to be the "right" Alexander Poole

• must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756

• must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there. • Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is valid, must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole. • Assuming that Roy Poole / Donna Cuzze are correct that his line ties into the John Poole line via William Pool of NC ---the probability is very high that our Alexander Poole connects very close to this (e.g. Thomas Poole would be our closest common ancestor if "Alexander son of Alexander" is my link point to the David Poole line).

notes: v Alexander as son of George - Needs documentation to establish that George had a son named Alexander. As once proposed by Roy Poole would be an excellent fit, however, there are two significant difficulties: 1) I have found no proof that George had a son named Alexander. and 2) a son of George would be "young", perhaps too young to be a good candidate for the father of This would be the closest possible connection and therefore (according to the statistics provided by familytreedna) the more likely -- however, without any documentation to prove that there actually was such a person. So, unless additional documentation can be found, this is tentatively ruled out.

Notes: (con't.)

v Alexander Poole, son of William, grandson of Thomas seems to be ruled out IF (as the evidence seems to show) the William Poole that moved to Bertie was the son of Thomas ---because there are several Williams, the "Bertie NC William Poole" might possibly be another man. However, the strong likelihood is that that he is, as most researches seem to agree, the son William and the grandson of Thomas. In addition, "William moving to Bertie" seems to fit well for known facts for the for the Col. Roy Poole line. ( See Roy Poole's research at ancestry.com, and familytreedna.com )

We know that when Alexander Pool,( father of James B Pool and Alexander Pool, Jr) died, he died intestate. We presume that no other family was there. The boys were bound out to the Ragsdale family. (it remains a speculative conjecture that the Ragsdale's were somehow related; since the Ragsdale's were shown related to the Harris family, which connects to the Hudson family, which connects to the Pool family-- see Belva Cauthen Research Notes Postings)

more wtp notes: Notes for Alexander Pool:

Alexander Pool Poole is proved as the father of James Pool by the extensive record research by Belva Cauthen. She spent a lot of time reviewing all available records ( in conjunction with her Harris / Hudson research) and the evidence that Alexander is well supported. This Alexander is recorded by the Church Wardens (who held quasi official status). Belva shows that this Alexander Pool seems to be closely associated with "affiliated" families that lived in the same areas of VA and witnessed each other's documents. My Hudson line . Ragsdale line, and Belva's Harris like are among the closely associated families. I have included a large selection of Belva's extensive notes in my "Descendants of James Pool" family tree file. In addition, James Pool's sworn testimony (Rev War Pension Application) says he was born in Mecklenburg in 1756-- and there is an Alexander Pool / Poole shown to be living there in 1755-1761. Alexander Poole died intestate, so we lack a "Will" document which could prove (or disprove) the connection. Both Alexander and James Pool were bound out to (different) Ragsdale's. I think it is likely that the Ragsdale's were related (we know there were Ragsdale - Hudson, and Ragsdale - Harris connections).. James B Pool's Rev War Pension application files contains a statement that James' birth records were lost in a fire in his Uncles' house. That Uncle could have been the Ragsdale's, it seems unlikely that he boys would be put in a non-family home if a family home had been available. wtp 8/2010

In 2012, a 67 marker Y chromosome match was made to a Poole / Pool line that claims descent from John Poole Sr., born between 1629 and 1637 In Elizabeth City County VA. Since then several other Pool /Poole lines have claimed this line. It is hoped that additional matches will be made in the future which will provide additional confirming / non-confirming matches. The profile manages believe we now have an absolutely clear document trail now ties this JOHN POOL to his father DAVID POOLE, A FRENCH HUGUENOT WHO IMMIGRATED TO VIRGINIA IN ABOUT 1620}.

THE FOLLOWING ROUGH NOTES ARE VALUABLE ALTHOUGH JUMBLED-, they include info from Audrey Pool, Belva Cauthen, and me ( Bill Pool)- I will try to return and edit these and add other related records. These records show that Alexander Pool and family lived in Brunswick VA until around 1762, when they moved to Mecklenburg (and where he died unexpectedly in 1767)

These and other records help support the tie of Alexander Pool to the ECC line of Pools (there is DNA evidence and supporting documents in at least 2 other Pool lines that provide much stronger support for the ECC tie)

The Pool - Mitchell documents add to other documents that show Susanna "Sukie" Mitchell is our best candidate for wife of Alexander Pool. We believe a marriage bond exists, but have not yet located one (if anyone has this document, please add it to this profile)/

see Middleton Poole's will... he left The Points Plantation to his wife, then upon her death to his daughter Ann, with Reversion to Alexander (JR) son of Alexander. Since Alexander Jr. and sons Alexander III and James were living in Mecklenburg VA when Alexander Jr died in about 1767 -- and not living on the Points Plantation, I think we can safely assume that Ann Poole, daughter of Middleton Poole, was still alive in 1767.

Note that this Alexander remains the best identified candidate for the father of James Poole

a) all other Alexander Pool men identified can be ruled out except for the proposed Alexander , son of George. Since I have found no solid evidence that Alexander son of George existed (all other children are named in documents), I have ruled that Alexander out also (subject to immediate reversal if I can find any documents that indicate Alexander, son of George actually existed) ... I believe that references to this Alexander Pool by several researchers may be due to a "copy and paste" of a totally "hypothetical" / non documented son of George Poole)

a) although very little documentation has been found on this Alexander Poole - the fact that he is not shown in ECC VA or Johnston / Wake NC increases the chance that this Alexander who went to Brunswick VA then Mecklenburg is the father of James and Alexander Pool

b) the number of generations to a common ancestor is so far out that a) the probability of an even more distant connection is a very low probability (since Roy Poole and I are perfect 64 marker matches, we have around a 95% probability of common ancestor at the distance of Thomas Poole or earlier ( Thomas would be 8 generations back for me, assuming this Alexander Poole is indeed my correct link).

IF THIS IS THE FATHER OF JAMES POOLE, THEN WE BELIEVE WE KNOW THE FOLLOWING ABOUT ALEXADER POOLE

Facts that have to fit to be the "right" Alexander Poole

a) must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756

b) must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there.

c) Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is valid, must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole.

d) must be born in a year compatible with James' birth in 1756

e) must not be a person whose DNA is identified by familytreedna as belonging to a different line of Pool /Poole.

f) assuming this is the same Alexander who was living in Brunswick in 1761 (likely because James was born there in 1756) -- wife's name was Susannah.

IN THIS DRAFT I HAVE SHOWN ALEXANDER, SON OF ALEXANDER AS THE FATHER OF JAMES B POOL. I DO THIS BECAUSE a) although several Alexander's are possible, this one currently looks to be the most likely and b) in a previous draft I showed the James Pool info with each of the Alexander's who might possibly be the father of James Pool - and I realized that shown this way it could easily be miss-read and cause confusion .

Here are 6 possible "candidates" for the father of James and Alexander that I looked at (Donna Cuzze, Joe Slattery, and others have also looked at this issue, and I have the benefit of their work).

)John Pool Sr. > Thomas Poole, Sr. > Alexander Pool -- ruled out because this Alexander died in 1742 in Elizabeth City , VA.

b) John Pool Sr. >William Pool Sr. > Alexander Poole.

c)John Pool Sr. > William Pool Sr. > Alexander Pool Sr. > Alexander Pool , Jr.

d)John Pool, SR >William Poole Sr. > George Poole > Alexander Pool. ( currently eliminated, I have no solid evidence that George had a son named Alexander)

e) John Poole SR > Thomas Poole Sr. > Alexander Pool >Alexander Pool

f) some other "Alexander Poole" that we don't currently have identified (certainly possible, however probably would be a more distant connection, and the probable distance to a common ancestor , as provided by familytreedna would make this significantly less probable).

Facts that have to fit to be the "right" Alexander Poole

a) must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756

b) must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there.

c) Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is valid, must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole.

d) Assuming that Roy Poole / Donna Cuzze are correct that his line ties into the John Poole line via William Pool of NC ---the probability is very high that our Alexander Poole connects very close to this (e.g. Thomas Poole would be our closest common ancestor if "Alexander son of Alexander" is my link point to the David Poole line).

notes:

Alexander as son of George - Needs documentation to establish that George had a son named Alexander. As once proposed by Roy Poole would be an excellent fit, however, there are two significant difficulties: 1) I have found no proof that George had a son named Alexander. and 2) a son of George would be "young", perhaps too young to be a good candidate for the father of James and Alexander Pool.

This would be the closest possible connection and therefore (according to the statistics provided by familytreedna) the more likely -- however, to date I have not found any documentation to support that there actually was such a person. So, unless additional documentation can be found, this is tentatively ruled out.

Alexander Poole, son of William, grandson of Thomas seems to be ruled out IF the William Poole that moved to Bertie was the son of Thomas ---because there are several Williams, the "Bertie NC William Poole" might be another man. However, "William moving to Bertie" is a good potential fit for the Roy Poole line.

We know that when Alexander Pool,( father of James B Pool and Alexander Pool, Jr) died, he died intestate. We presume that no other family was there. The boys were bound out to the Ragsdale family.

THIS IS THE BEST OF THE CANDIDATES FOR FATHER TO JAMES AND ALEXANDER POOL. ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION IS NEEDED TO IDENTIFY WHICH IS THE CORRECT CONNECTION. New DNA INFORMATION HELPS CONFIRM LINKAGE

Family Tree DNA autosomal DNA match results. Autosomal DNA match between Wm Pool and Dave Cobb appear to confirm this is a descendant of Alexander Pool, Jr who died in Mecklenburg in 1767 leaving sons Alexander and James orphans. This is an important confirmation for this Poole / Pool line; previously we were dependant on Church warden's records, deeds, etc to tie the James B Pool and Alexander Pool III lines together-- the Dave Cobb DNA match provides very strong confirmation of this line which traces back to David Poole, an expert wine maker and French Huguenot refugee who was a French Huguenot, born in Languedoc France, fled to England in the religious wars, and at an early age immigrated to England, and, was sent by the crown to Elizabeth City County VA in 1619 in and attempt to develop a commercial wine industry in the VA Colony.
