Biography

Peter Poole was born in 1758, Fairfax Co. Virginia the son of William Daniel Pool and Catherine Ann Swearingen. [1]

Revolutionary War

Peter's first public record was serving as a private in the Revolutionary War under the command of Capt. Thomas Triplett and Col. William Grayson. He served with the 16 Virginia Regiment for the enlistment of three years 1777-1780. Peter saw action in: [2]

  • The Battle of Germantown
  • The Battle of Monmouth[3]

He was honorably discharged Sept. of 1780 due to ill health and was given a grant of 100 acres of land in Fairfax Co., VA. The source is an application made by the DAR by Betty Mae Griffin Scherer. [4]

Peter married Phoebe Strossnider Oct. 1778 at Augusta Town, VA.

On September 1, 1826, Peter Poole, age 69 years, along with the following of his fellow Revolutionary soldiers headed a memorial parade held in Washington, Pennsylvania in memory of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, signers of the Declaration of Independence: Capt. Jonathan Morris, aged 73 years; Thomas Fergus, James Kerr, 73 years; James Reed, 77 years; David Hamilton, 77 years; Andrew Peas, 63 years; Thomas McClelland, 71 years; Robert Marshall, Thomas Nichol, 78 years, George Montel, 69 years; Patrick Cavender, 77 years; James Taggart, and John Beabout. Colonel Gabriel Blakeney was in town, but indisposition prevented him from attending.[5]

The 1790 Federal Census or " Fairfax Co. Taxables" states that Peter lived in Fairfax Co. near William and Thomas Pool; 1 male above age 16 and 1 horse.

Peter, by 1792, moved to Frederick Co., VA.

The 1800 Federal Census states Peter is living in Frederick Co. 1 male above age 16 and 2 horses. The

1810 Census:

  • Peter Pool age 45+;
  • two males 10-15;
  • one female45+;
  • three females 0-10;
  • one female 10-15 and
  • one female 16-25.
  • Phoebe Pool age 45+;
  • one male 0-10;
  • two females 16-25.

Peter and Phoebe must have owned two seperate properties with two different census takers and dates. This didnt happen often, but not unusual because they had two homes.

  1. Peter Jr 1800-1852 (who died in Green County, Pennsylvania) and married Francis Wilson.
  2. Daniel Pool born in 1790 in Virginia, and died before 1859? (Actual death unknown) His wife's was Catherine, age 48 in the Cardington, Morrow Co. OH census , with one son named John.
  3. William, born 1804 and died before 1860. William was married to Sarah, born 1801; Virginia and no children according to the 1850 US.

The daughters of Peter and Phoebe were:

  1. Nancy m. Matthew Griffin;
  2. Phoebe m. George Knox;
  3. Lydia m. Foster;
  4. Sarah Anne m. William Wilson;
  5. Catherine m. William Campbell, and
  6. Elizabeth remained single.

Other possible family members may be Dennis and Thomas Pool who were witnesses on his Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application.[7]
