Biography

Jacob was born in 1812 the son of John Henry Pool and Jane Wood of Smithfield Twp. Jefferson County, Ohio. William Wood his grandfather owned a tavern and house in the village of Smithfield according to his parents marriage document of 1811.

Jacob parents and grandparents moved to Nottingham Twp. Harrison County, Ohio by 1820, US Census states that John and Jane are living with their 4 infant sons next to William and Margaret Wood.

Jacob most likely worked as a farm laborer, this was common for his teen sons to work for farmers later, county taxes were payed, in exchange for neighbors repairing a county road or bridge. I believe he worked as a teen in Steubenville, Ohio were the Wood family owned property and his grandfather John Hicks large family of 12 children lived here.

John Hicks of Green Twp., Harrison County the 1820 US Census states that John had 4 daughters under the age of 10. John died in 1855 and son Samuel Hicks filed a Probate Court action in Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio. John had 7 daughters and 4 sons quoted the "True America" newspaper advertisement 8/29,1855 of public notice by Attorney's Moody and Elliott of Steubenville, Ohio according to the US Government Archives of Newspapers of Chronicles of America.

Jacob Pool and Mary Hicks were married in Dec. 1836 in Harrison County. The 1840 US Census states that Jacob Pool was living in Washington Twp. Monroe County, Ohio next to his parents, John and Jane Pool and his wife Mary have one son Alexander and one daughter Jane.

The 1850 US Census the first one to list all household individuals by name. Jacob born, Ohio age 38; Mary born MD, age 37; Jane 10; Alexander 12; John 8; William 6; Thomas 2 and Joseph six months. Mary must have died after 1856 when her youngest son George W. was born. One other daughter is known Violia born 1853.

Jacob married Elizabeth Conley June, 1860 Washington Co. Ohio the source being Family Search Ohio Marriages. The 1860 US Census states that Jacob was living in Independence Township Washington County, Ohio age 48, a shoe maker and farmer living next to his brother William Pool.

His new wife Elizabeth 49 born PA.; Alexander 22; Violet 7 and George W. age 4. Alexander would marry his cousin Sarah Jane Pool Stewart in 1863 and died in the Civil War 1864. They had one son born 1864 named Alexander who disappears after the 1870 Census.

His other sons John, William,Thomas and Joseph are working as farm laborers in Monroe, OH according to the 1860 Census and the eldest three would serve in the Civil War and move to Richland County, WI. Joseph lived next to his uncle William Pool.

One son John Pool is mistaken by a few family trees as the son of Nickolas Poole 1828 to 1926 son of John Poole and Mary Claybaugh of Fairfield County, Ohio who moved to WI in 1852. John, William and Thomas all Civil War Veterans moved here by 1866 ironically, may be 2nd cousins to Nichalos.

I believe that his grandfather William Pool who was born after 1750 and died after 1830, he lived in Fairfax VA 1785;Washington MD 1790 to 1805? to Washington, PA owned land in Belmont, OH by 1816 lived there 1820 and 1830 next to his son Samuel.

Samuel married to Cynthia Enochs parents of 11 children, two of their daughters Susan Poole 1826 to 1901 married John Williams 1819 to 1919 and Mary Poole 1830 to 1900 married Dan Williams 1825 to 1911 John's brother, all died in Middleburg Noble, Ohio. Elizabeth Poole 1830 to ? married David Spencer 1853 of Noble, Ohio and later to Samuel Black maybe six children.

Cynthia Enoch Poole eldest of 15 children, moved after 1850 with her 7 sons to Missouri with some of her Enoch brothers. Many of this family may not be aware that Samuel Pool was the brother of John and William Poole of Fairfield, Ohio 1840.

The oldest Tax List for William and Samuel Pool, Somerset Twp. Belmont, Ohio is 1831. William Pool of Fallowfield, Washington, PA the 1830 Census moved to Fairfield, Ohio by 1840.

Jacob and brother Joseph are living in Woodsfield Monroe, Ohio after 1865, where Jacob died 1869. George shows up married and living in Monroe County by 1880. Dies in Richland, WI a widower with no children. US No record of Violet or Jane have been found yet? Looking? Jacob died in 1869 living in Woodsfield, Monroe County, Ohio. Richard.
