JAMES B POOL AND JAMES J POOL OFTEN REFER TO THE SAME MAN. Our family records show his actual name to be James B Pool, but he was called "Jacob" which I think to be a nickname for James. His tombstone in the Traynham family cemetery reads "James J POOL" , but this is a more recent tombstone. Wills and other primary references sources just call him "James POOL"
James and Ursula were buried in the Traynham Family Cemetery, however there is a Historical Monument to them and their family at the Pool Family Cemetery in Laurens SC
Note: a minimum set of "key" documents to support / prove this line are included in the bottom of this section.
DNA Connections
At least two Descendants of James B Pool have had Y Chromosome DNA testing ( Wm T Pool, Jr and Edward May Pool) an two ( Wm T Pool, Jr and James R Evans) have had autosomal DNA testing. Results are available at FamilyTreeDNA.com :
YSEARCH.org / familytreedna.com show the following lines are connected within 10 generations or less (approx 98% confidence level)
Note: James Pool was called Jacob by friends and family. We are not sure why. (we are aware that Jacob is a Biblical equivalent of James) There are other James in the Pool family, perhaps calling James "Jacob" was a family tradition (James and Jacob come from the same root name). According to Wikipedia James is a modern variant of Jacob {from Wikipedia: "According to our best records, his middle initial was "B" not "J" -- according to Wikipedia, James came into the English language from the Old French variation James[1] of the late Latin name Iacomus. This was a dialect variant of Iacobus, from the New Testament Greek Ἰάκωβος (Iákōbos), from Hebrew יעקב (Yaʻaqov) (Jacob)."]
James Pool despite being orphaned at a early age and lack of formal education, became a prosperous cotton farmer in South Carolina. He was able to set each of his children up with a property, a home, and working capital. The Pool cotton business and land holdings in the Laurens SC were extensive and successful.
James was a combat veteran of the Rev War. He fought in the Battle of Gates Defeat (now commonly called the Battle of Camden) where the commanding general (General Gates) fled the field of battle in terror, and according to reports, rode back to Richmond leaving his officers and men to fend for themselves.
locations of birth was taken from Rev War Pension Files. these files give two birth years ( 1746 and 1756), the 1756 date appears to be the only date consistent with the dates James was bound out to the Ragsdale family and the date he was released from the bond.
"This _________ states that he was born in Brunswick County Va about the year 1746. The record of his birth and other documents burned in his uncles house in this state". This may refer to a Mitchell Uncle or it might indicate that there was another Poole / Pool relative living in Brunswick.
After Alexander Pool died intestate, the Churchwardens bound the Pool boys out to the Ragsdale family. The significance of this is unclear. It might indicate that the Ragsdales were related either to the Pool's or Mitchell's. If Alexander's wife was Susanna Mitchell as believed (based on strong documentation, see Alexander Pool's profile), it is curious that no-one in the Mitchell family took over the care of the boys.
According to a handwritten document -- Publication number M804, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant application files, James and Ursula moved to Laurens county SC in 1784 or early 1785. A confirming testimony from James Riley in 1848 states that James and Ursula were already in Laurens when he moved into the neighborhood in December 1788. Also confirming the earlier date is a November 6, 1784 Deed where James Pool bought 40 acres on sw side of Reedy river from Johnathan Downs Esq. for 15 pounds.
from Mecklenburg Church Records
James Poole, orphan of Alexander Pool, bound out to Benjamin Ragsdale, 1770; to be bound out again 1776 by Ch'ward
several points on this brief entry - and related matters according to VA law, indentured children were to be released from their contracts when they turned 21 - this seems to support the 1756 birth year of James Pool (1746 and 1756 are given in the Rev War Pension files, the Pool Family Bible has 1756). this is also consistent with father Alexander Pool , Sr dying intestate in about 1765 -- according to VA law, the master was required to educate the indentured child -- but James Pool was illiterate
since James served in the Rev War, at least in part, in lieu of other men, it is likely that he inherited little money (there was a lawsuit against an Alexander Pool in Princess Anne, Virginia; the case was filed against the "administrator" which indicates that this Alexander Pool was dead in 1767 which is consistent with "our" Alexander Pool having died in 1767) since James was able to become a highly successful cotton farmer, he must have acquired at least enough wealth to buy tracks of land, slaves, and equipment -- the initial land being purchased before father in law William Hudson gave land in NC and SC to his daughters and sons in laws. extensive review of Mecklenburg records by Harris/Hudson researcher Belva Cauthen strongly supports Alexander Sr as the father of James B Pool.

Served in the Rev War. Pension (Pension Record W 9233). Served a total of 12 months on the Virginia Line as a private soldier. Had three periods of service. The most notable was the infamous battle of "Gates Defeat" (now called the Battle of Camden) in which General Stephen Gates, facing British forces led by Lt General Lord Cornwallis; fled in terror from the battle field and reportedly rode directly home in record time, leaving his subordinate officers and troops to fend for themselves. This battle, which reportedly lasted only an hour or so, took place on August 16, 1780 about 6 miles north of camden SC. Some weeks later after the battle James remained with the remnants of the defeated General Green took command of the Southern Army and James received his formal discharge from service.

Condensed Proof of the line of descent for James B Pool Condensed Poof of line for from David Poole of ECC through Wn H Pool II of Greenville, SC By William T Pool,Jr current Rev dated January 2016
Condensed Proof of line of descent for James B Pool:(pages 1-13) proposed direct line : David Poole - John Poole - Thomas Poole- Alexander Pool Sr. - Alexander Pool, Jr - James B Pool Plus Appendix ( pages 14-41) Supplemental Evidence, NOT intended as "proof" (and is not included in this Wiki Tree file). The purpose of this document is to put enough of the key documents to support the ancestry of James B "Jacob" Pool. It is by no means a complete collection ( the Pool family tree is now approaching 900 documents) however the following is believed to provide sufficient key documents. Caveat: the weakest link in this chain is proving which Alexander Pool is the father of James Pool. Since Alexander died intestate, we don't have a single clear document that we have for other links in this chain. A collection of indirect documents has been provided for Alexander. (THE "CONDENSED PROOF IS THE FIRST 13 PAGES OF THIS DOCUMENT, THE REST IS REFERENCE AND BACK UP) 1. Allied Families: Linking our "DNA cousins' allied families" and finding those same relations back among the "ECC Poole / Pool families" is not claimed as a "proof", it does, however, add "weight" to the argument. I have seen many examples mentioned -- these are just a few where I still had records of the conversations. { note that this same type of approach has been known to lead researcher into errors. Many, including me, had at one time ,believed that our Pool line ties to the Pettypoole line because the two families lived in the same areas and migrated to the same "new areas" at about the same time.} Before getting to key documents, I should note that for a long time, many excellent Pool / Poole genealogist have suspected / believed our Pool line ties to the ECC Pools because of the very large amount of data that points that way. At this time (2016) opinions differ about how strong the documentation is, and if the linkage can be said to be" proven".
Audrey Pool provided me several examples of "allied families" from her line, unfortunately, I only have a few of the cases she noted. An example from my line are • Wm T Pool, Jr( James B Pool ancestors and descendants) Bagwell family. In 1910, my grandfather was partnered in business with J Henry Bagwell ( Pool and Bagwell Groceries), these Bagwells are shown to tie to the McCuen family (Wm B McCuen married our Catherine Pool and they are buried in our Pool cemetery) -- J Henry Bagwell's ancestors came from Wake NC where his gg grandfather married a Martha Poole (whose birth year and location is the same as a known descendant of the ECC Poole's) and another probable descendant of ECC Poole, Thomas Poole , died while living with the Bagwells in Wake NC. • Donna Cuzze suggested several possible family linkage. In ECC Ragsdale - Avera - Poole. I will attach Dona's email for reference. Now for my line, the two sons of Alexander Pool (Jr) were bound out to two Ragsdale family members after Alexander's death in 1767. This is just one of several possible allied family linkages; I have no proof that this is the same. Ragsdale family. Published Nash Family History (attached to this paper) provides a large number of possible connections to our line of Pool. First is shown more recent family connections Linking our line of Pool from Laurens SC to Nash, Traynham, Bolt (remember that several Bolts were buried in the Pool family cemetery.. Mitchell links. Several in our family have given names of "Mitchell". I have offered a series of documents to show that a Mitchell married my 5th great grandfather Alexander Pool. Likewise, Audrey believes she has a Mitchell grandmother in her husband's Pool line. So far, I have not been able to document a Mitchell allied connection all the way back to the ECC Poole timeframe. --- Our (James B Pool line) Pool’s tied to a number of families in Laurens SC – including Nash, Ingram, etc which tie to Avary / Avery which are clearly documented to tie to Avery people that lived in Bertie, Wake and Johnston area of NC., Several genealogist claim these are , in fact, descendants of the Avera family (and John Pool’s children and Henry Avera’s children were a “blended” family , since John’s wife Jane married Henry Avera after John died. The children remained very close.) Weaker, but still interesting names include "Bolt" which connect to both Pool and Nash in Laurens SC. I have not been able to determine if "Bolt" family who are buried in the Pool Family Cemetery near Princeton SC tie to the proposed "Boult" family which Donna Cruzze suggested as the maiden name for John Poole's wife, Jane Pool (who married Henry Avera after John's death). Likewise, I do not have enough data to search for the allied Bolt family in Henry Co GA. Hudson, Harris, Benton and Medlock are additional names of potential "allied families " interest - but I have not yet found sufficient data to help with or against a ECC VA tie in argument. These names are all reported in conjunction with the Nash of Laurens SC and Henry Co GA. There is a Hinton name associated with the Nash. In Roy Poole's line there is a Hinton Soney Poole. We are looking to see if we can determine the origin of the "Hinton" given name and to see if that data provides any clues to where these DNA match families tie together. Audrey Pool (who feels that the ECC connection is likely but unproven) wrote in 2012 On Sep 15, 2012 Audrey Pool wrote: a..."I think you can see why I think Thomas Pool (earliest ancestor) is our direct line! Our John Pool and "Huldah" lived on Halfway Swamp, Saluda River, Edgefield District, SC .... If we put these two records with the previous Whitfield / Herring record of I O W VA an Whitfield / Poole of ECC .... and Thomas Poole on the Whitfield will of 9 Sep 1695.
additional notes from Donna Cuzze follow:.
2. Potential links to several of our "DNA cousins".
Again, this is not presented as a "proof" but the potential fit of known ECC line Pool / Poole data to several Y haplogroup G persons is encouraging. It is stressed that these "potential" fits fall clearly in the range of speculation -- however, most of the alternatively suggested "fits" that were once claimed, can now be ruled out by DNA.
I suggest that these "connections" offer promise of connecting to ECC include my Line, Roy Poole's line, George Pool's line, and possibly Barbra Pool's line. As noted here, I propose my connection is via Alexander Pool. For Roy and George, Soney Poole may connect via Howard, Hardy, and George Poole on to William Pool. For Barbra Pool, since she ends with a Nicholas Pool, looking to the ECC Nicholas Pool might be worthwhile.

ALEXANDER POOL (JR)
The following evidence shows Alexander Pool is father to James and Alexander Pool (III) and attempts to determine "which" Alexander Pool this is.
{IT IS RECOGINIZED THAT THIS IS AN INDIRECT "PROOF", AND INHERENTLY WEAKER THAN THE REST OF THIS DOCUMENT CHAIN.. BUT SINCE ALEXANDER, FATHER TO JAMES, DIED INTESTATE, IT IS LIKELY THE BEST WE WILL BE ABLE TO DO}
JAMES POOL'S FATHER IS FULLY DOCUMENTED / PROVED TO BE "An" ALEXANDER POOL BY ST JAMES PARRISH CHURCHWARDEN'S RECORD:. So the issue can be restated as "which Alexander Pool" which in effect actually comes down to "which Poole / Pool man was the father the Alexander Pool who died in Saint James Parrish in Mecklenburg in 1767,and grandfather to James and Alexander Pool?"
The Saint James' Churchwarden's Records contain the following entry in 1767: Alexander Poole, s/o Alexander Poole, bound out to Richard Ragsdale, 1767 Alexander Poole's estate sale money to go to Churchwardens, St. James Par. 1770 James Poole, orphan of Alexander Pool, bound out to Benjamin Ragsdale, 1770; to be bound out again 1776 by Ch'ward (Churchwardens).
Note that supporting evidence that Alexander is the father of James is provided by: • the fact that that James Pool's brother , Alexander, named children for William Hudson ( James's father in law and benefactor to both brothers). • the age that Alexander Pool's sons, ( James and Alexander) were bound to the Ragsdale family is consistent with the birth years for James and Alexander • the location (Mecklenburg) is consistent with the known location of James and Alexander Pool, and is , again, consistent with this Alexander being the father of James and Alexander • the date (1767) of Alexander's death is consistent with James and Alexander's ages . Proving which of several Alexander Pool men was the correct one (" restated as who was this Alexander Pool's father" ?)has proved a considerable challenge. Since a single direct evidence is not available (father Alexander died intestate; we have no Will or other documents referring to father, siblings, or cousins) several indirect approaches were taken -- with the goal that the weight of the cumulative evidence might serve as "proof" of which Alexander Pool was the father of James and Alexander Pool. a) All identified Alexander Pool men were identified (see list below) and all could be ruled out except for Alexander, son of Alexander, grandson of Thomas. note: A wider search was made at ancestry.com and at Wiki tree for other persons named Alexander Pool or Poole living in VA (these are generally regarded as having extensive data bases). This search yielded a list of 20 Pool / Poole names (some of which were duplicate entries with the alternative spelling for Poole / Pool., Except for one name for which there was literally no information (no dates, no locations, no parents, wife or children) only our "ECC Alexander Pool's had birth / death dates which were possible for the father of my James Pool. Certainly there could be additional men named Alexander Pool that did not make either of these data bases, but it remains supportive that no additional viable names were found. b) There is no continuing record of Alexander Pool, Jr (son of Alexander Sr.) remaining in the Elizabeth City or NC areas (see discussion below). We see documentation for the other brothers, so lack of documentation for Alexander Jr is supporting evidence that it is he that moved to Brunswick and then on to Mecklenburg VA. c) The given name Alexander seems to have come from an earlier "Avera" connection. This line of fathers and sons named Alexander seems to trace directly back to Alexander Pool, son of Thomas who is the first known Poole / Pool in this line to have the given name Alexander. (As noted above, a search through ancestry.com and Wiki Tree confirmed that this was an uncommon name for Pool / Poole men in VA in this time frame.) (WTP July 2014) Basis of selection Alexander, son of Alexander as father to James Pool . (this is revised thinking since 2012.... we have additional documentation which appears to disprove all known alternative cases). Work by Joe Slattery, Bill Avery, and Donna Cruzze helped identify all "Alexander Poole men and to prove that all those identified, of than Alexander son of Alexander, can be proved as invalid connections.
• Evaluation all other Alexander Pool men identified can be ruled out except for the proposed Alexander , son of George. Best evidence is that "there was no such person" as Alexander , son of George. (all other children of George Pool are clearly named in documents, lack of any primary documentation or even contemporaneous supporting documentation strongly indicates that this Alexander" was merely an error by a some modern day genealogist which got " copied and pasted" into a number of secondary documents
1. although very little documentation has been found on this Alexander Poole - the fact that he is not shown in ECC VA or Johnston / Wake NC increases the chance that this Alexander who went to Brunswick VA then Mecklenburg is the father of James and Alexander Pool
2. the number of generations to a common ancestor (as predicted by Familytreedna) is so far out that a) the probability of an even more distant connection is a very low probability (since Roy Poole and I are perfect 64 marker matches, we have around a 95% probability of common ancestor at the distance of Thomas Poole or earlier ( Thomas would be 8 generations back for me, assuming this Alexander Poole is indeed my correct link; so any further distant connection is shown to have less than a 5% probability).
Matching Criteria: - Requirements necessary to be a viable candidate for father of James and Alexander seem to all be met by the Alexander Pool chosen:
• IF THIS IS THE FATHER OF JAMES POOLE, THEN WE BELIEVE WE KNOW THE FOLLOWING ABOUT ALEXADER POOLE
Facts that have to fit to be the "right" Alexander Poole - Alexander, son of Alexander meets all of the following criteria.
a) must have lived in Brunswick VA since James in sworn testimony states that he was born there in 1756 b) must have lived in Mecklenburg VA in 1767 since father of James and Alexander died there. c) Assuming the ECC David Poole connection is valid, must be a descendant of David Poole and his son John Poole; and likely also a descendant of Thomas Poole. (as noted, I also looked for any other lines of Poole / Pool which had an "Alexander Poole / Pool who might fit, these 20 identified names produced no additional candidates).
d) must be born in a year compatible with James' birth in 1756 e) must not be a person whose DNA is identified by familytreedna as belonging to a different line of Pool /Poole (many published Pool family trees persist in linking to Pool men who have been shown to have incompatible Y DNA) f) assuming this is the same Alexander who was living in Brunswick in 1761 (likely because James was born there in 1756) -- wife's name was Susannah.
• Possible "Alexander Poole men" that were evaluated Here are 6 possible "candidates" for the father of James and Alexander that I looked at (Donna Cuzze, Joe Slattery, and others have also looked at this issue, and I have the great benefit of their work).
a)John Pool Sr. > Thomas Poole, Sr. > Alexander Pool -- ruled out because this Alexander died in 1742 in Elizabeth City , VA.
b) John Pool Sr. >Thomas Poole > William Pool Sr. > Alexander Poole.-> ruled out due, good evidence that this Alexander was the one in land disputes in NC (and therefore not the Alexander who moved to Brunswick then Mecklenburg)--ruled out
c)John Pool Sr. > William Pool Sr. > ? this option is pure speculation with no supporting evidence-- ruled out
d)John Pool, SR >Thomas Poole .> William Poole Sr. > George Poole > Alexander. ( ruled out, I and others have searched and have not found any documents which indicate that George had a son named Alexander)
e) John Poole SR > Thomas Poole Sr. > Alexander Pool Sr. >Alexander Poole (Jr.) -> our best case, no conflicts ... currently our only viable option that is supported by documentation.
f) some other "Alexander Poole" that we don't currently have identified (certainly possible; a search at ancestry.com and Wiki Tree produced a total of 20 potential Alexander Poole / Pool men in VA. Only the identified 5 appeared to be possible. Independently, looking for another "hypothetical" unidentified Alexander Poole / Pool from the ECC Poole line, would almost certainly be a more distant connection since the close connections appear to be well documented and researched. This "more distant ECC Alexander" would yield an increased "probable distance to a common ancestor" , as provided by familytreedna would make this a very low probability).
• notes: f) Alexander as son of George - Needs documentation to establish that George had a son named Alexander. As seen in some family trees and as previously proposed by Roy Poole, if valid, this would be an excellent fit; however we find documented names of George's children and the name "Alexander" is not seen on these lists.
g) Alexander Poole, son of William, grandson of Thomas seems to be ruled out since that William Poole that moved to Bertie and his son Alexander is documented as remaining there. Because there are several Williams, I attempted to evaluate if "Bertie NC William Poole" might be another man. I was persuaded by the documents and evidence produced by Joe Slatternly. (Though not germane to this discussion, "William moving to Bertie" appears to be a "best fit" for the Roy Poole line, since he knows his people came from NC.)
We know that when Alexander Pool,( father of James B Pool and Alexander Pool, Jr) died, he died intestate. We presume that no other family was there. The boys were bound out to the Ragsdale family.
more wtp notes: Notes for Alexander Pool:
Alexander Pool Poole is proved as the father of James Pool by the extensive record research by Bella
Cauthen. She spent a lot of time reviewing all available records ( in conjunction with her Harris /
Hudson research) and the evidence that Alexander is well supported. This Alexander is recorded by the Church Wardens (who held quasi official status). Belva shows that this Alexander Pool seems to be closely associated with "affiliated" families that lived in the same areas of VA and witnessed each other's documents. My Hudson line . Ragsdale line, and Belva's Harris like are among the closely associated families. I have included a large selection of Belva's extensive notes in my "Descendants of James Pool" family tree file. In addition, James Pool's sworn testimony (Rev War Pension Application) says he was born in Mecklenburg in 1756-- and there is an Alexander Pool / Poole shown to be living there in 1755-1761. Alexander Poole died intestate, so we lack a "Will" document which could prove (or disprove) the connection. Both Alexander and James Pool were bound out to (different) Ragsdale men.

JOHN POOLE
There are multiple documents that tie John Pool to his mother Jane Pool and father David Pool ; and also to their children. Here are two. The following document names John Poole's wife and children and the date of his death. Specifically , for our direct Poole line, this proves Thomas Poole is John and Jane Poole's eldest son. It notes that Jane Pool married Henry Avera after the death of husband John Poole. Condensed Poof of line for from David Poole of ECC through Wn H Pool II of Greenville, SC By William T Pool,Jr current revison dated January 2016
Condensed Proof of line of descent for James B Pool:(pages 1-13) proposed direct line : David Poole - John Poole - Thomas Poole- Alexander Pool Sr. - Alexander Pool, Jr - James B Pool Plus Appendix ( pages 14-41) Supplemental Evidence, NOT indended as "proof".

{IT IS RECOGINIZED THAT THIS IS AN INDIRECT "PROOF", AND INHERENTLY WEAKER THAN THE REST OF THIS DOCUMENT CHAIN.. BUT SINCE ALEXANDER, FATHER TO JAMES, DIED INTESTATE, IT IS LIKELY THE BEST WE WILL BE ABLE TO DO}
JAMES POOL'S FATHER IS FULLY DOCUMENTED / PROVED TO BE "An" ALEXANDER POOL BY ST JAMES PARRISH CHURCHWARDEN'S RECORD:.
[ see separate research on Susannah, I believe I have established that she was Susannah Mitchell, daughter of William Mitchell]
