John was born 1770 in Fairfax, County, Virginia the son of William Daniel Pool and Catherine Ann Van Swearingen. The 1850 US Census states John was born in Maryland, which I believe was Montgomery county founded 1776 from the larger Frederick and were Catherine's mother and siblings lived many past the year 1800, created close family relationships just across the Potomac.
The 1790 Fairfax County tax list "Census" states that William Pool has 4 males above the age of 16, which included Dennis, John Henry, Dennis, Richard and wife Nancy DeVaughn. Peter and Thomas lived close by and William Jr moved to Washington Co Maryland by 1790.
George Washington refers to that group of Pool's related being related to an overseer Thomas Allison 1796 brother -in - law of Dennis Pool, whose wife sells chickens to Martha. George refers to that group of rascals "the Pool's".

Edward Poole married Susannah Wiley, Oct. 1792 Dennis Poole married Elisabeth Allison and June, 1794 Henry Poole married Catherine Stone at the Historical Old Presbyterian Church, Alexandria, Virginia by the Rev. James Muir, the pastor from 1789-1817. I believe that their oldest son was Samuel Henry Pool Sr. who married Mary Webster in 1813 in Fairfax County and moved to Grandview Twp. Washington County, Ohio in 1835. Samuel died in 1846 not to be confused with Samuel Pool of Monroe Co. husband of Cynthia Enochs who also died in 1846 and son of William Pool Jr of Belmont, Ohio.
John I believe was living in Montgomery County, Maryland in 1800 because the Census has a John Pool age 26-44 and wife 26-44 and two sons under 10. Montgomery is across the Potomac River from Fairfax County, Virginia. Today these counties are part of Washington, DC. John may have been living in Frederick County in 1810 has a J. Pool with John 26-44, one female 26-44, males 0-10 one, 10-15 one and one female under 10. The other J. Pool and his son owned slaves as stated in the 1820 US Census.Catherine must have died 1810? This is speculation but I know that it was common for families to travel from Maryland to the Ohio Valley in three weeks by wagon and foot travel according to other family histories.
John was in Springfield Twp. Jefferson, Ohio by June of 1811 when he married Jane Wood in the house and Tavern her father William Wood. What was his motivation. This is on the marriage record and a History of Jefferson County states that William Wood owned a Tavern in Springfield and property in Steubenville.
John had moved to Nottingham Twp. Harrison County, Ohio by 1818, he owns 3 cows worth a value of 24 dollars. William Wood owns 2 horses worth 80 dollars and 2 cows worth 16 for a total of 96 dollars.
The 1820 Census states that John Pool age 50-60, wife Jane 40-50 and 4 sons under age 10. They are living next to William Wood. Family Search has one Harrison County Tax Record of John Pool in 1828.
William Wood's Will in 1832 Harrison County states that Jane Pool is the eldest daughter of 6 sisters and 5 brothers. William came from Scotland and was 83 years old when he died. John must have been a farmer but like other Pool's did seasonal skilled labor.
Son Jacob wasn't living in the house in 1830 Census states that only 3 sons were there. The 1860 Census has three of Jacob's sons hired as farm laborers living in Monroe County. The Harrison County newspaper states that one John Pool has delinquent mail in 1822 and 1825 at the Cadiz Post Office to pick up. Jacob Pool married Mary Hicks in 1836 Harrison County and David Pool married Elizabeth Gorley 1846 in Harrison County.
We have three BLM and GLO US Government Records that three Poole males from three different townships and two Ohio Counties on Sept. 20, 1839. One: John Pool was at the Marietta Land Office and purchased 40 acres in Washington Twp. Monroe County, Ohio. Two: Samuel Henry Pool Sr. who purchase land at the land office 1836 in Grandview Twp. Washington County, Ohio. Why would Samuel be the son of John? Because, Samuel Sr. purchased land on Sept. 20, 1839 in Grandview Twp. Washington County, Ohio.Three: Roswell Pool also purchased land on the same day Sept. 20, 1839 in Monroe, County, Ohio.
Who was Roswell Pool? Roswell was the son of Dennis Pool Sr. the eldest son of Richard Pool Sr. who settled in Grandview Twp. Washington County, Ohio in 1801. Dennis Sr. was born in 1787 in Fairfax County Virginia and named after his uncle Dennis Pool who died in Fairfax before 1830.
John Pool in the 1840 Census is stated as being 70-80, his wife is 60-70, two sons 20-30 and living in Washington Twp. Monroe County, Ohio. His son Jacob is living next door. Sons William and Joseph would marry in Monroe County but the Courthouse burned down once before the Civil War and a 1868 fire left no records. Samuel Pool Sr. died in 1846 and was buried in Pool Family Cemetery located in Grandview Twp. and he left a Will probated in Washington County, Ohio.
Samuel's Will is listed in the Spirit of Democracy in 1846-1847. Samuel sons were Thomas Randolph, Richard, John, Samuel H. and Jonas. Daughters Catherine, Sarah Eleanor, Susanna King and Wife Mary Eleanor Webster. The estate was valued at 1 to 2 thousand dollars signed 1846.
On Sept. 13, 1845 one William Kirkbride and Sept. 27, 1845 one Reuben Powell both were suing John Pool of Washington Twp. Monroe, Oho Delinquent Land and Lots the payments due was $ 1.65 plus a 30 % penalty which resulted in a Sheriffs Sale on the courthouse steps which John lost a judgement and 20 acres to these wangers who turned down monthly payments of one half cents to nourish their one / half watt brains.
John and Jane are living in Washington Twp. Monroe County, Ohio. The 1850 US Census was the first that all the individual household members were listed by name, their sex, age, state birth or foreign birth; social status like farmer, house wife, in school, slave etc. John stated at age 80, farmer, MD; Jane is 65, Samuel age 21 both born VA. Richard Pool of Perry Twp. is age 84 and born VA.
Samuel H. Pool Jr. two Census records. Census marshals were usually the local postmasters. John's census was taken in Nov. Samuel H. was of course their grandson age 29, the nine looks like a one. Why would Samuel be living here? He must have been the caretaker for his elderly grandparents in the house and on the farm.
Samuel's second census being in Jolly Twp, Washington County, Ohio the month of July. Samuel age 29, Martha his wife age 18 and infant daughter Mary. We know that his daughter Peromelia was born Jan. 1848 and her sister Mary Eleanor 1850. Martha could have died in child birth or a few years later, because Samuel married Amanda Jones Sept. 5, 1856, Washington County, Ohio the same year his brother John married Hannah Rinard.
The 1860 US Census has the two sisters living with Sarah A. Robinson their grandmother and four sons. Sarah and her husband residents of Fayette County PA moved to Benton Twp. Monroe County, Ohio by 1840. Read the bio of Samuel Pool Jr.
Samuel and Amanda are living in Green Twp. Adams County, Ohio next to Richard Pool Jr. the youngest son of Richard Sr. Samuel is a tenant farmer or helper, he served the Union Army (the 33rd Ohio Infantry Regiment) and lived next to his more successful brother John in the 1870 Census and the family moved to Lubec Wood County, West Virginia 1872.
Their are two Samual Pools born in 1820 Virginia 1. Samual H. born in Fairfax County and 2. a Samuel PPool or Pettypool found in southern Kentucky by 1860. The important truth is that Samuel H. is John Henry's grandson. Samuel Pool 1820? died in 1882 and his eldest son name was Samuel Henry Pool who was living in Grandview, Washington County, Ohio 1880 Census and later died in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Spirit of Democracy, "The newspaper of Monroe County and Woodsfield", states many times that John was delinquent on his property taxes every year in the 1850's. The county tax and plat map of 1853 shows John Pool was owner on 20 acres, resident of Washington Township two miles from the Little Muskingum River. This proves the other 20 acres were sold by the Sheriff ordered by a judge.
1845 John's son Joseph moves to Woodsfield.
John many times was listed as being late to pay taxes on his property or farm in Washington Twp. Monroe Co. Jan. 1846, Dec. 1848, Dec. 1857 and Jan. 1859 and Dec. 28, 1859. This is great for his genealogy record for we know he most likely died in 1859. John isn't on the 1859 Landowners Map. I believe he died in 1858.
John may be buried in the Pool Family Cemetery of Benton Twp. in Monroe County? A second question is this the same Pool Family Cemetery of Grandview Twp. Washington County where Samuel and Mary Webster Pool are buried. Both townships border each other, an investigation of the headstones would answer some questions?
Like who are William and Harriet Pool? Harriet died in 1811 and William 1816, Harriet could be the daughter of Richard Pool and Hannah Devaughn their last son Richard was born in 1812 or 1811 and they did have one set of twins. William could be their grandson who died an infant. Genealogy is personal history of the past and present, but mostly is entertainment.
The Atlas Map for 1859 Grandview Twp , Washington County has John Pool as owning the farm and property of his father Samuel Pool Sr. this may be called Bells Ridge and be the location of Pool Family Cemetery three miles above New Matamoras on the Ohio River. Records in the Jefferson and Harrison County Court Houses remain to be investigated.
I believe John died 1858 and should not be confused with John Poole born 1811 PA to 1860 Woodsfield, Monroe, I believe he was related Levi Pool of Belmont whose relatives or father was born in England or George Poole the father of Philip who died 1898, this family was German.
