Shirlie was born in 1881. Shirlie Pope ... She passed away in 1927 of pneumonia. She had become sick and her sister, Verna, rode her horse across the frozen Missouri river to try and take care of her. She was buried at the old Dunn Center cemetery along with her daughter Hazel who had died at birth. At some point after her death, the cemetery was closed down because it was found to be on top of a burning coal mine. Many of the graves were moved, but Shirlie remained at the cemetery. Her son and daughter in law tried to make arrangements to have her moved, but it didn't happen as planned. Her husband was buried at the new Dunn Center cemetery. There was no gravestone, so Helen Gage Johnson placed a stone there in the 1990's. She decided to add Shirlie and Hazel's name to the gravestone, but they are not buried there and the name is not spelled correctly. The correct spelling is Shirlie![1]
