Family appears as following in the 1870 Census:
In the 1910 Census, besides Reuben's and Mattie's children, there is also a 20 year old nephew living with them. He is listed as: E. Cowan. He was born in 1890 in Tennessee. Everyone in the family could read and write. All underage children had attended school within the past year. Reuben, the head of the household was employed in a lumber yard. Viney was employed at a foundry. Louis Works, Vater Pope's husband, was a handy man and did odd jobs. It is interesting to note that Mattie and all of the children were listed as Mulattos, but that was crossed out and a "B" was put in (or it was the other way around, you really can't tell). Reuben was listed as Black as was Louis Works. So the obvious conclusion was that Mattie and the children were light-skinned.
The 1920 Census shows Reuben, Mattie and their youngest child, Albert at home. All could read and write and all three had attended school within the past year. Reuben and Albert were employed at a foundry.
