Julius Pope was born to James William Pope and Elizabeth (Newbutt) Pope in 1840 in Torquay in the Newton Abbot Registration District, Devon, England. [1] In his birth registration, his name is written as Julis, then a 'u' inserted. Unsure whether the middle name of 'Carter' is actually 'Caesar'! (handwriting difficult to read).
Julius Caesar Pope had 12 brothers and sisters: Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Newbutt, Edmund Robert Newbutt, Henry James Newbutt, Francis Charles Newbutt, Leah Newbutt, Emily Newbutt, Hannah Newbutt, Eliza Neubutt, Maheliah Newbutt, George Asa Newbutt, and Mark Newbutt. Bliss for a genealogist, to have such an unusual surname repeated with every child...
Julius's father, James, was a builder in Torquay (Devon), but the family is hard to trace after 1851. There also seems to be some mystery about the surname POPE, as some of the younger ones favoured the name DREW instead, until the youngest five Drews were gathered up in a bunch and rebaptised as Popes on the same day in 1855.[2]
Julius died in 1875 in Pancras, London. He was only 36. [3]
