Jesse McKinnie Pope was born circa 1739 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina[1] Jesse is the son of John Pope and Mourning McKinne.
Jesse was a minor child when his father John Pope died in 1744. By 1757 Jesse was 14 years of age, and as children who were 14 years of age could choose their own guardian Jesse chose his Uncle Henry Pope as his guardian. The court minutes reads as follows: "Wednesday morning the 16th November, 1757 . . . Jesse Pope Orphan of John Pope Dec'd, came into Court & choose Henry Pope his guardian who was approved to give security in the sum of five hundred pounds proved John Bradford & Barnaby Lane were produced as securities who were approved of."[2]
Jesse was still a minor in 1759 when his Uncle Henry Pope filed his annual return with the court in Edgecombe county, North Carolina. The court minutes reads as follows: "1759 . . . Henry Pope guardian of Jesse Pope exhib'd an inventory of his estate."[3]
Jesse married twice:
Jesse purchased in 1770, 175 acres of land in Edgecombe county, North Carolina. The deed reads in part as follows: "North Carolina Edgecomb County} To all people to whome these presents shall come I Patrick Braddy and Ann my wife of Halifax county send greeting know ye that I the said Patrick Braddy and Ann my wife for and in consideration of the sum of Forty pounds current money of Virginia to me in hand paid at or before the ensealing or delivering hereof by Jesse Pope of Edgecomb County Planter the receipt whereof I do here by acknowledge myself to fully satisfied contented and paid have granted bargained sold conveyed enfeofed Assigned confirmed and sett over unto the said Jesse Pope one certain tract or parcel of land with all its appertainences lying and being on the north side of fishing creek containing by estimation one hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less and is part of a tract of seven hundred acres granted to Joseph Dicon . . . In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this [space blank] day of [space blank] year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & seventy. [signed] Patrick his + mark Brady Ann Braddy Signed seald and delivered in the presents of Test Andrew Irwin, Mitchel Dormon, Joseph Bradly Excepted out of the said deed twelve foot square where the grave of my wife Ann deceased is before assigned November Court 1771 Edgecomb County}The within deed of sale was in open court acknowledged in due form of law and at the same time Ann the wife of the within named Patrick Brady being privately examined by Jesse Hare Esq freely relinquished her right of Dower in the premises which is ordered to be certifyed & the deed to be registered . . ."[5]
Jesse deeded in 1783 the 175 acres he had purchased in 1770 to his son Adkins Pope with certain restrictions during the life of Jesse Pope. The deed of gift reads in part as follows: "This Indenture made the fourth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty three Between Jesse Pope of the county of Edgcombe & state of North Carolina of the one part and Adkins Pope of the county and state aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Jesse Pope for & in consideration of the natural love and affection which he the said Jesse Pope hath and beareth unto the said Adkins Pope hath given, granted aliened enfeoffed and confirmed and by these presents doth give, grant alien enfeoffe and confirm unto the said Adkins Pope his heirs & assigns one certain tract or parcel of land with all its apertainences lying and being on the North side of Fishing Creek containing by estimation one hundred & seventy five acres be the same more or less and . . . I do reserve the use of the above said land and plantation and all profits thereupon arising to myself during my natural life, and the said Jesse Pope for himself his heirs executors & administrators doth covenant grant & agree to and with the said Adkins Pope his heirs and assigns by these presents that he the said Adkins Pope his heirs and assigns shall and lawfully may from time to time and at all time after my decease peacably and quitly have hold use occupy possess and enjoy the said lands tenements, hereditaments and premises hereby granted and confirmed with their and every of their appurtenances free clear and fully discharged of from and against all former and other gifts, grants, bargains, sales, jointures, seossments, dowers entails recogrizances executions and of and from against all forever and other titles troubles charges and incumbrances whatsoever had one or suffered or to be had made done or suffered by him the said Jesse Pope his heirs and assigns or any person or persons lawfully claiming or to claim by from or under him them or any of them In Witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal the day and date above mentioned [signed] Jesse his X mark Pope Signed sealed and delivered in presents of John Batts, John Swales Edgecombe County November Court 1783 The execution of the within deed of gift was in open court duly acknowledged & ordered to be registered Test Edward Hall C.C."[6]
Jesse moved to Greene county, Georgia in 1786. Jesse and wife Mary were members of the Powelton Baptist Church in 1786. There were two 'Mary Pope' members and a Nancy Pope.
Jesse purchased 418 acres of land in Greene county, Georgia in 1789. The deed reads in part as follows: "State of Georgia Green County This Indenture made the day of [blank space] in the year of our Lord one thousand [seven hundred] and eighty nine Between James Bishop of the above mentioned state and county of Wilkes of the one part and Jesse Pope of the above mentioned of Georgia and county of Green of the other part Witnesseth that the said James Bishop for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds sterling the receipt whereof the said James Bishop doth hereby acknowledge have granted bargained sold alieaned enfecoffed released and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain & aliean enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Jesse Pope his heirs and assigns for ever a certain tract or parcel of land containing four hundred and eighteen acres situate lying and being in the county of Green on Camp Branch of Fulsom Creek . . . in Witness whereof the said James Bishop hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above written [signed] James his J mark Bishop Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us Matt. Rabun A J, William Rabun, A Reeves Registered this 6th day of August 1790 Edw Bradley C.S.C.G.C."[7]
Jesse lived in that part of Greene county, Georgia that was taken in 1793 to form Hancock county, Georgia. Hancock county, Georgia was officially formed on the 17th of December, 1793 from parts of Greene and Washington counties.[8]
Jesse and his son's Jesse M. Pope, Collin Pope, Samuel Pope & Henry Pope appear in the 1804 tax list in Hancock county, Georgia. Jesse and son's Samuel and Henry Pope appear in Capt. Strothers District, Jesse M. Pope and Collin Pope appear in Capt. Lewis's District.[9]
Jesse made his last will and testament in December 1818, in Hancock County, Georgia. Jesse's will reads as follows: "In the name of God amen. I Jesse Pope of Hancock county state of Georgia Farmer being well at present & of sound mind & memory; I thank God for the same, but calling to mind the mortality of my body, knowing that it is ordained that man must die, do make this my last will & testament that is to say principal & first of all I give & recommend my soul into the hand of almighty God who gave it my body to be buried in decent Christian burial, not doubting but I shall receive the same again by this mighty power. Touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give & bequeath the same as follows. I give to my son Jesse M Ke Pope my negro fellow Lewis which he now hath in his possession on his deducting five hundred dollars off from his value which sum of money he sent into me. I give to my son Collin Pope my negro boy Julius. I give to my son Henry Pope my negro boy Frank. I give to my daughter Mary Denton my negro woman Daphne. My will & desire is that the remainder of my estate both real and personal with which I am possessed at my decease shall be sold and from the proceeds thereof I give to my son Samuel Pope fifty dollars. To my daughter Ann Lang one hundred dollars. To my grand daughter Mary Weaver one hundred dollars. To my grand daughter Frances Godwin one hundred dollars and the remainder after settling up the above legacies my desire is for it to be equally divided between my daughter Mary Denton my son John Pope and my daughter [black mark not readable] Trippe. Having [black mark not readable] away my land still &c to my son Allen Pope [black mark not readable] decease I conclude that they will be [black mark not readable] his part of my estate. I appoint my trusty friend John Denton and Joesph Roberts Executors to this my last will and testament and I hereby [black mark not readable] revoke disallow and disannul all former will and testaments allowing constituting this and none other to be my last will and testament. I witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal [corner torn] Dec. 1818. [signed] Jesse Pope Signed and sealed in presence of Starling Evans, John B. Denton The within will duly proven before us in Chambers this 5th day of June 1820 by the oaths of Starling Evans & John B. Denton the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be filed in office until the next court. Walter Hamilton J.I.C. Micajah Thomas J.I.C. Georgia Hancock County} Inferior Court sitting for ordinary purposes 3rd July 1820 present their Honors Walter Hamilton Barnaby Shewles, Micajah Thomas, John Benson The last will and testament of Jesse Pope dec having been proven before the honorable the Inferior Court sitting for ordinary purposes on the 5th day of June last by the oaths of Starling Evans and John B. Denton the subscribing witnesses. It is ordered that said will be admitted to record and that letters testamentary be granted to John Denton & Joseph Roberts (who were duly qualified and letters granted to them."[10]
The Inventory of personal property of Jesse Pope dec was taken the 12th July 1820 and begins on bottom of page 260 and goes to page 262. Bottom of page 262 is list of the sale of property of Jesse Pope dec. with purchaser and amount sold for, and goes to page 265.[11]
In Jesse's will he named two of his grandchildren. They were Mary Weaver who married Cordy Weaver 12-15-1812 Hancock County, Georgia. Frances Godwin who married Barnaby Godwin 4-25-1814Hancock County, Georgia.
Jesse died the 3rd of May, 1820 in Hancock county, Georgia at the Pope Plantation.[12]
Jesse Pope is not shown in any records in North Carolina or in Georgia using a middle name of McKinney or a middle initial of M.K.
