Biography

Louise Papke was baptised 13 April 1846 in Garnsee, West Prussia, daughter of Andreas Papke and Christine Rutkowski.[1]

Louisa Popke[2] was born 1 April 1846 in Prussia.[3]

Louisa emigrated to the United State via Liverpool, England, on to Queenstown, Ireland, upon the Minnesota. She arrived in New York City, New York the 3rd of December, 1874.

According to the 1880 census, Louisa kept house and both her parents were born in Prussia.[4] Michael and Louisa were living at 1511 North Street in Des Moines when the 1880 US Census was taken.[4] The household also included Gus H., Anna, Louisa, Harry, and Frederick.[4] By 1885, they were living at 1321 6th and North Sts in Des Moines.[5] David, Lena, and Eddie had joined the family by that time.[5]

In 1895, the family was still in Des Moines.[6] The family's religion is listed as Lutheran.[6] In the home were living Michael and Louisa with their children, Rudolph, Frederick, Lena, Christine, and Edward.[6]

Louisa was enumerated in the 1900 US Census, despite her headstone stating her death date as 28 December 1899.[7] The census was taken on 6th of June, 1900, so a possibility is that the headstone was erected much after her death, and the year was off by one, making her death date 26 December 1900 instead of 1899.[7] The family was at 510 North Street (should this be 1510 North, next to where they were in 1885?).[7] Michael and Frederick were working as laborers, while Louisa was at home, along with Lena, Christine, and Edward.[7]

Louisa died 26 December 1899 according to some cemetery records, November 28 1899 for her pauper's grave entry, and her daughter's family bible lists the December date. She is buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.[3]
