Biography

Anna (Porter) Gaylord immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Flag of Essex (historic flag)
Anna (Porter) Gaylord was born in Essex, England.

Ann/Anna Porter, baptized 22 September 1621 in Felsted, Essex,[1] was the oldest of twelve children of John Porter and Ann White.[2]

Ann arrived in New England with her parents and eight siblings about 1638,[2] possibly aboard the ship "Susan and Ellen", on 17 July 1638. The family settled at Windsor, Connecticut by 1639/40, when her father was appointed constable.[3]

Ann married 24 February 1641[/2?], at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, William Gaylord.[2][4][5] They had the following children born at Windsor, Connecticut:

  1. Ann, born 24 April 1645,[6] died 27 September 1690, married Isaac Phelps[2]
  2. Hannah, born 30 January 1646,[7] died 3 August 1678, married John Crandall[2]
  3. John, born 27 January 1648,[8] bap. 4 February 1648/9, died 27 April 1699, married Mary Clarke[2]
  4. William, born 25 February 1650[/1],[9] died 1680, married Ruth Crowe[2]
  5. Hezekiah, born 11 February 1652,[10] bap. 14 February 1652, died 12 September 1677 unmarried[2]

Ann died in Windsor, Connecticut on 21 July 1653.[2][11]

Research Notes

The Anna Porter (under age 20 and unmarried) named in the 20 April 1648 will of their father, John Porter, is NOT the Ann of this profile, but another daughter of that name (probably sister Hannah). John Porter's will does not name his eldest two daughters (the Ann of this profile and Sarah). In 1650, a statement acknowledging this omission was added by the executors of John's will, giving John's two eldest daughters 30 pounds each.[2]

I changed my mind about merging Porter-651 and Porter-1. There are facts on both profiles that need to sorted before more merges muddy them further. It will take a few weeks for me to find sources for these people. Thank you for your help and patience. April D.D.
